Chapter 12: Someone Else's Future Plans
“Dakota! You've got mail!” Kadence screamed more excitedly than she usually is at eight in the morning.
I never got mail, so, naturally, I hopped out of bed, made sure I had clothes on, and ran down the stairs, almost landing flat on my face. Kadence was in the kitchen with the stack of letters in one hand, but she held one apart from the others. Grinning curiously, I snatched it from her, and when I read the address, I dropped it as if it burned me. The fancy return label read Adams Art Academy.
“Open it!” Kadence shouted at me, and I jumped before crouching down and gingerly picking up the envelope, like it might break.
With shaky hands, I tore open the thick paper.
“What's going on?” Niall grumbled sleepily as he stumbled down the steps.
I glanced over at the stairs and realized that Kadence's shouts had woken up the boys. I tried to calm my racing heart as I continued getting my letter out. This letter was my entire future, in just one single page. I took a deep breath, feeling even more pressure as the kitchen filled up with the boys. Then, I slowly unfolded the page. My eyes frantically searched for the first word since that would tell me all I needed to know. I caught sight of a capital C and let out a breath of relief.
“You got in!!” Kadence screeched, hugging me in her arms extremely tightly and lifting me off the ground slightly.
The boys cheered with her, but all I could do was smile like an idiot. All my muscles were relaxing, and I felt so light that I thought I might float up to the ceiling. It was the happiest moment of my life so far. I settled down enough to sit at the kitchen table to read the letter in full, past “congratulations.” The boys and Kadence all sat around the table too, smiling proudly at me. Once I had finished reading, I passed it to Kadence, knowing she was using all of her patience waiting to get a peek at it.
“Great job,” Harry grinned with a thumbs up.
“Yeah, I was upset about being woken up, but that's really fantastic,” Niall agreed.
Louis patted me on the back since he sat next to me and said, “Congratulations.”
“Yeah, no small feat getting into college,” Liam told me encouragingly.
I blushed, but it was a good blush for once. My cheeks were flushing because I was finally relieved of the stress of not knowing, and my heart was swelling with the accomplishment. Looking back up, I caught Zayn's eyes. He had remained quiet, and I wondered if he would say something. He grinned so widely that his eyes crinkled at the edges, sparkling under the weak lighting. He opened his mouth to say something but then shook his head and looked at the table before smiling at me again. I was okay with his silence though because I myself didn't really know what to say.
“This is great,” Kadence said breathlessly, squeezing my shoulders again.
Then, I jumped up, making my chair fall backwards. Rushing with a new found excitement, I picked it up while the boys stared at me.
“I've got to go tell my dad!” I told Kadence before sprinting upstairs to grab shoes, not even bothering changing out of my T-shirt and basketball shorts.
I ran back downstairs, snatching the keys and my letter on my way to the garage and shouting at the boys and Kadence, “Be back soon!”
I couldn't stop grinning as I literally sped to the prison and ran inside, holding on tightly to my letter. Richard looked surprised when I rushed up to his desk to sign in.
