<Tris's POV>
2 weeks later.
They told me I'd be okay. That everything would be okay. Once we found the safe haven they took care of our wounds and explained to us that it is Erudite against Dauntless right now. They told us that Erudite believes that the Dauntless faction is a waste of space and that we are a threat to our resources. They also want to destroy divergents who they also believe are a waste of resources. Amity, Candor, and Abnegation are uninvolved right now. But the Dauntless survivors do not stand alone. The factionless have joined us in the fight. They only joined two days ago so there are still more people moving into our make shift home.
The shelter we have found is mostly underground with one floor above ground. We have whatever weapons people have shown up with and food is limited. Small teams go on runs to collect the food and water is pumped from a well. There are four special bedrooms for remaining Dauntless leaders but only one remains, me. I get one of the rooms that I share with Marlene. I gave the other three rooms to Christina and Will who share a room, Lynn, Shauna, and Hector share a room, and Uriah and Zeke share a room. Marlene is a good friend and whenever my problems surface she is there. Everyone else sleeps on the old couches we managed to drag into our fortress or on the floors with blankets and if your lucky a pillow. Although yes these are problems they are not my biggest problems. I am a Dauntless leader but with Tobias' death still effecting me I'm finding it hard to rule. Tori helps when she can but people don't listen to her as much because she is not official.
Tobias dying really broke me. I don't walk with my head up as much. In my sleep I have nightmares and I thrash around. The first person I have ever been in love with is dead and I don't even get to bury his body properly. I didn't even get a proper goodbye. First my parents, then my lover, and I still don't know where my brother is. Probably caught up in Erudite.
Meanwhile the Erudite have blown up the place where Tobias took his last breath. They blew up the bridge so we couldn't get resources so we would have to surrender. What they didn't know was that we had already dug a tunnel underground that leads under the river that is moving way to fast to cross. Even if it didn't move fast. The Erudite have put open electrical wires in it. If someone were to step in it that would be where they took their last breath.
Now I walk out of my room and to the room where we eat our meals. It's dinner time, and our meal consists of beans and bread. There are different silverware sets thrown around the table. Along with the lucky plates we managed to get from a shop on a run. I find my friends and sit next to them quietly. Christina shoots a sympathetic smile in my direction. I force a weak grin back at her before picking up a knife to cut through my bread that is burnt to my misfortune. "So Tori wants to try and get a team to go to Candor and get them on our side," Will says before taking a mouthful of beans. I shrug.
"Finally someone is doing something around here," Ange, the transfer from Candor that Christina told me to watch out for because she had her eyes on Tobias, says. I just take the insult as the statement was directed to me. Lynn throws her fork into the table so hard it stays there.
"Hey, what was your name again? Ange," Lynn hisses, "how bout I carve that oh so precious name onto a giant wall with the words Dauntless under it and then your body tied to wall next to it," Lynn snarls. I smirk the tiniest bit and look at Lynn who is sitting right next to me. Ange gives her a scowl but Lynn won't take the abuse. She rips the fork from the table and stands up in front of Ange. "What was that look princess?" Lynn asks. No one stops her at first.
"You realize you're threatening me with a fork right," Ange says matter of factly. Lynn raises her eyebrows and Uriah gets up from his seat.
"You'd be surprised what I can do with a piece of silverware," Lynn threatens. Uriah inches closer to the two.
"Maybe you should've done something with that fork of yours when you let that guy fall off the bridge," Ange says. Lynn doesn't even wait a second. She screams, drawing the attention of the entire dining hall to her. Raising the piece of silver ware she is about to bring it down on Ange's face, when Uriah steps into the disagreement and pulls Lynn away by the waist. Lynn shouts profanities at the girl and then throws the fork into the wall right next to Ange who walks away confidently.
Once the action is over Ange's words come back. That guy that fell off the bridge. The sudden mention of him makes a lump form in my throat and I wipe my mouth with a small napkin before getting up from my seat and walking back to my room.
That guy. That guy that fell off the bridge. How dare he be referred to as that guy. That guy was my true love. That guy had a name, an identity.
Tobias Eaton
<Tobias' POV>
"Peter!" I hiss. He looks to me from his makeshift bed with a scowl.
"What?" He snaps.
"I think I hear someone coming," I whisper. Peter gets up from bed and joins my side. We tried to get across the bridge once the Erudite were gone only to figure out they had bombs set to detonate in a matter of minutes. We ran and then decided to attempt to cross the river. It would be dangerous, yes, because the flow carries so heavily and strong but it was worth a shot. Until it was electrocuted. Now Peter and I have been looking for a way across but have been let down with every plan. Now we are simply in an abandoned building hoping for a flash a luck.
"I don't hear anything," Peter claims. When I look out a crack in the wall I realize that he is right. No one is there.
"Sorry for waking you, I just could of sworn I heard something," I say desperately. Peter pats my shoulder. The past two weeks Peter has become a little kinder and I have accepted that he has hurt Tris in the past. It was hard to get over but in order to stay alive we have to agree and work together. We are not really friends but we are most certainly not enemies.
"Was it a voice?" Peter asks. I nod my head and look into a puddle of water from the recent rain. My face is scarred and has dirt and dried blood scabbed all over it. Bloodshot eyes take place of my natural ocean blue ones from lack of sleep. My lips are dried and my skin is peeling. I'm a mess on the inside and the outside. "Was it her voice?" He asks tiredly. I close my eyes and think. It was. I didn't notice it in the moment, but her voice was like silk traveling through my eyes like a smooth current. My heart warms and I visualize her in my mind. Her blonde hair running down to her waist . Black clothes clinging to her skin and a makeupless face. Naturally beautiful to me. "If you wanna find her why don't you leave a message for her," Peter suggests. I open my eyes wide.
"That's perfect," I say quickly before literally sprinting out of the building and finding an old store with hardware items. Peter yells from me as he trails begin me. When I reach the small shop I shatter the glass doors and head inside. Taking two cans of paint and a paintbrush in my mouth I sprint right past Peter again as he rolls his eyes at me and find a wall that isn't completely knocked down.
Taking the blood red paint I lather it all over my brush and paint in large messy letters, Tris I'm alive, I'm looking for you -4. Peter shows up after I am done and admires my work.
"Well that's just perfect, can we go back to sleep now," Peter nags. I nod my head but don't move. Peter sighs and with a roll of his eyes he walks away. Almost all night I sit under the wall half asleep and wait even though I know she won't see it yet. Halfway through the dark night I decide to write more messages everywhere. On signs, walls, rubble, and even abandoned cars and streets. She won't miss this massage, I know it.
Because whether I find her or vise versa it doesn't matter as long as I am holding her in my arms.
A/N hey guys it's been awhile and I know half of you wont read this. I'm not sure if this book is really off hold yet but here is a short update that I managed to write. I hope you can stick with me for a little while longer. I'm so sorry for slacking.
Love you all.
