Chapter 18
*AVERY STARR*
"I don't like Leo King. I remember him from the restaurant." Adalynn cringes at the thought of it. I understand why. It was a disaster. Joshua and Jacob just left us there, and we had to pay for all the food and broken plates.
"He's making everything horrible and he probably doesn't even know what 1+1 is." Jacob adds frowning.
"Why did you leave us at the restaurant?" I ask afraid that they won't answer.
Tsk tsk. A noise comes from behind us.
"W-w-w-what was t-that noise?"Jacob asks stuttering and looking scared.
"I don't know..." Adalynn answers, afraid too.
"Should we go check it out Jacob? We're the big guys that should be brave." Joshua says. He has a look of fear on his face too, but it is nice seeing him acting all brave.
"But -" Jacob tries getting out of seeing what the noise is.
"Let's go, Jacob. Don't be a scaredy-cat." Joshua grabs his hand out of mine and drags him towards the noise.
Adalynn runs to me and envelopes me in a big hug, as if I'm going to protect her.
I roll my eyes.
"Adalynn, you're older, shouldn't you be protecting me?" I try to joke with her.
"Avery, this is not the time. We are alone in the forest, we don't know when the boys will come back. This is serious. Don't joke right now." She says to me, her eyes widened.
I nod. I know she's taking this seriously, and that I should be too.
We end up sitting down on a log that's fallen down. We keep the silence, but it's uncomfortable. I am worried about them.
Finally, after waiting more than four hours, the boys come back, their hair messed up and they look exhausted.
Adalynn jumps up immediately. "Where were you guys, what happened, what took so long?"
Slowly, Joshua starts falling and knocks down Jacob with him. Then I notice what is happening right now; THEY ARE FAINTING! I run down the hill and grab Joshua by his waist to protect him.
"What's happening?!" Adalynn asks doing the same thing as I am but with Jacob.
"They're fainting. I wonder what took them so long and why they fainted." I say still shocked that Jacob and Joshua fainted. I glance up at the sky, it's sunset. WAIT IT'S SUNSET?
"I know, it's so late." Adalynn says as if she could read my mind. Actually, she can. We walk the rest of the way in silence.
Dragging Joshua is very hard, he's like 150 pounds!
We finally reach the outskirts of the forest about an hour later. We didn't take any breaks, we wanted to get Joshua and Jacob out of the forest as soon as possible.
"We need to get them back to their house, but we should probably call their mom or something." Adalynn. She is one hundred percent worried about them - well, more about Jacob.
"Good idea." I place Joshua gently on to the ground, and quickly take my phone out of my butt pocket. I toss it to Adalynn.
"Why are you giving this to me?" She asks as she catches it swiftly.
I look up at her. "Don't you know their mother's phone number?"
"No." She says, panic forming in her voice.
"Oh, great." Silence. Suddenly, an idea pops into my mind. "Take Jacob's phone, and go through his contacts, find his mom." I instruct her.
"Okay." She nods frantically. She looks through his sweater pockets and jean pockets. She shakes her head. "He doesn't even have his phone, unless he lost it when they were back there checking things out."
"I'll look through Joshua's pockets." I do the same as Adalynn did to Jacob. I find it in the first pocket I look in - his left jacket pocket.
"Good! You found it!" Adalynn cheers as I lift it up for her to see. "Now hurry. I hope they don't die."
"Don't worry, they won't." I say reassuring her. I turn on the phone, but he happens to have a password. My happy expression drops. "Adalynn, he has a password."
Her jaw drops. She shakes her head. "It's not surprising, but how are we going to figure out his password?!" She screeches.
"We have to guess." I tell her simply, as I start messing around on the phone and plucking in random numbers.
"Try his birthday." She tells me.
"I don't know his birthday!" My voice is a little louder. I am starting to panic.
"Try one two three!" She urges me.
I sigh as I type it in. I don't expect it to work, but it does! My eyes widen. My jaw drops. I cannot believe it.
"What? Did it work?" She screams.
"Yeah, it did! It worked!" I yell. "Good job, Adalynn. Now, I'm going to call Mother Slithering number 2." I tell her before going through his contacts and finding her.
I wait for her to pick up, but she doesn't. I slowly take the phone away from my ear. "She didn't answer." I say, my voice, sounding so sad.
"Try again, then!" Adalynn yells.
I obey, and she answers.
"Mother Slithering number 2! I am so happy you picked up!" I basically scream into the phone.
"Who is this?" She asks suspiciously.
"It's Avery Starr." No need to explain.
"Oh, hello Avery! What do you need? Why are you using my son's phone?" She asks.
"I need you help. Come pick us up at the official entrance of the forest, and I'll explain everything later. Please hurry!" I tell her frantically, and then I hang up.
Twenty minutes later, she appears in her van. She runs out and joins us, keeping her eyes on Joshua and Jacob the whole time who are still lying on the ground.
"What happened?!" She screeches.
"I don't know, but they fainted or something." Adalynn explains.
"Let me check their pulses." She says, basically ignoring Adalynn.
She puts her two of her fingers onto Joshua's wrist first. Her eyes widen, but she doesn't speak. She then does the same to Jacob's wrist.
She lifts her eyes to us after a few seconds.
"I think... I think they're dead."
