"Okay... Why Bluebird?'' Her mother asks interested in her daughter's choice of code name.
''Well, I love blue, and mother always says I'm like a little bird, so why not?'' Inside Rebecca knows it isn't the real reason, but she won't tell her parents the true connection to that name.
''Bluebird it is then!'' Her mother says in a final way, clapping her hands together.
''Honey, I want to show Rebecca my office and some of my gadgets. Won't you please carry on so long without me?'' Her mother asks her husband who nodes in agreement and leaves the room. Her mother pulls her aside into the room on the left. It looks like an office for a single person, very much like the study in the house they live in now. A leather seat is positioned behind a dark wood desk. The heavy curtains are still drawn, and the room is shrouded in darkness.
Her mother opens the curtains as she starts talking, ''I want to talk to you alone. About that quest your father talked about. It is known to many in our field that us Kelly's have a family secret, but only the woman know what it is.'' She turns to Rebecca after opening the curtains. There is only a small amount of light coming it, but it makes a huge difference.
''What do you mean a family secret? And none know except the woman, not even Grandpa or any of the other Kelly men?''
''No, and none can find out now. Promise me you won't tell a living soul,'' she moves to Rebecca with an excited expression and grasps Rebecca's hands in hers.
''I won't tell a living soul,'' Rebecca repeats with a frown on her face. This whole day has been filled with confusion. Nothing in the world seems to make sense anymore. It seems to her as if there is no end to the intricacies of all the secrets. She cannot help feeling slightly betrayed by all the secrets that were kept from her.
''Have you noticed that your skin is rather transparent? That you can see the veins in your body, especially the upper body?'' She stretches Rebecca's arm and runs her fingers over the blue-purple veins that marks Rebecca and herself as a Kelly woman. Her maternal instinct kicks in as she looks at the daughter she loves.
''Yeah, I don't think it is a big deal. I mean all the woman in the family have it," Rebecca says as she pulls back her arm. She had always felt a little insecure about her strange complexion. She meets her mother's eyes and notices how they are twinkling with excitement.
''Exactly!" Her mother exclaims almost breathlessly. "It is said in an old legend about our family's woman, that it is a road map to the promised land. All the women have had their veins recorded in the form of paintings. It is said that when the twenty fifth generation female is born, the map will be complete, and all the pieces should fit to make a map to the promised land." She pauses for the information to sink in before she resumes talking. "You are the twenty fifth generation female, Rebecca. We need you to get your veins recorded on fabric so that we can fit the pieces together." Her mother grabs her shoulders in attempt to make clear to her daughter how much she wants this and how important this is to her.
''Wait, wait, wait," Rebecca stops her and pulls away from her. A frown is now plastered on her face as she tries to make sense of what her mother told her and what she is expecting from her. "You are telling me that my veins are a map? And you want me to get someone to paint my veins so we can find a random land that may or may not exist? Just because of some story that grandma or someone told you?''
''It's not just a story that is in our direct family, the whole community of superhumans that have abilities like we do know of this legend. And yes, you should have it painted, we have all done it, all the Kelly woman throughout the ages. It is also said that the last person, the last piece of the map has the responsibility to find the land and make it the home of the superhumans. Wherever that may be.'' Her mother looks at her intently with an expectant facial expression.
Rebecca's father comes bounding excitedly into the room. "Do you want to go on a job with us?" Her father asks with unmasked enthusiasm. The joy of being able to share his passion with his daughter and finally getting to unveil all of their secrets, which were torture to keep from her, is almost too much for him.
"Do you think she is ready?" Her mother asks, feeling as if he is being a bit unrealistic in his expectations of their daughter.
"Hmm, you're right we should probably firstly teach her how to use her abilities for these situations. Right then, get ready for training!" He says as he taps the steel door frame he was leaning against as he leaned into the room.
Rebecca and her mother follow her father to his work facility. A solid door leads to a large grey themed practice room. It has a large blue and grey fighting mat in the middle of the room and lots of white wooden cabinets against the walls holding who knows what. Rebecca has a feeling she would find out soon though. White tube lights shine down harshly on them from above as they make their way to the edge of the mat. "Your mother will teach you how to use and control your mental powers and I will teach you self-defence." Her father says grabbing the attention of her wondering eyes. She cannot believe that all of this has been hidden here all of this time. Her father's words sink in, and excitement rises inside her.
"Just like in all the books I read!" She bounces slightly on the balls of her feet in excitement. Who does not dream of being a superhero and doing training for missions?
"Come to life," her father replies to her in a matter-of-fact way as he looks around the room with red bricks that have never been plastered which gives it a rustic feeling.
