When they arrive at the house of the Miles family, the day is coming to an end and the lights from the police vehicles light the white walls of the house. The entire yard and section of the street is humming with cars and officers. Some are wearing bulletproof vests and helmets as they stand around the lot with guns clasped close to their chests. Their car stops and her father takes the key out of the ignition.
"Whoa! The situation seems more serious than I originally thought," Her father says as they all pour out of the car. Her father scans the group for a leader and walks over to who he assumes is the captain of the police force. He is a rather chubby guy with dark hair and a mustache. Her father looks over to her as if to confirm that he is indeed walking over to the captain and Rebecca and her mother nod in confirmation. "Hello, Captain! We are the extra help you called for," he says coming to a halt next to the policeman and putting his hands on his hips.
"Yes. Thank you for coming." He sticks his hand out and her father shakes his hand with a firm grip. "I have never dealt with such a situation. Strange things are going on in there. Abnormal things. I heard from a reliable source that you guys do well with abnormal things. So, we called you up."
"Your source was right; we do indeed do well with abnormal situations. But I'm curious as to what kind of strange things you saw."
"We sent someone in to try and find a way to save them or at least to see if we can't negotiate a deal. Our guy had an earpiece and a microphone on his person. As he was sneaking in, he got caught by the robber. It was like he got hypnotized by him. He made him do, say anything he wanted. Our inside man destroyed his earpiece and in doing so cut off our only connection to him. We were afraid he might have gotten hurt or even killed. He came out of the front door a while after and gave us the robber's requests and collapsed. He hasn't woken up yet and his heart rate is low. We are all a bit on edge."
"We are dealing with a rogue metahuman with mental abilities to make anyone say and do exactly what he wants," her father thinks to himself, knowing that Rebecca and her mother would be listening.
"Thank you for the information and I hope your colleague will recover soon. " The policeman thanks him by nodding briefly. Her father walks back to the car where the others are waiting impatiently. Kyan is practically reeling to go in his typical thrill-seeking nature.
"I just got an update on the situation. It seems like the robber is a rogue. He has a mental ability that allows him to make anyone do whatever he says. We will need some sort of shielding against him." He walks over to the car, and he rummages for something in a large black duffel bag. He pulls out four small containers, which he hands out to every member of the agency.
"These are just normal earplugs, but it should do the trick."
"How is this supposed to help?" Kyan asks as he holds out the container with an utterly unimpressed facial expression.
"You know how hypnotist use their voices to let people fall into a deep sleep?" Her father explains as he inserts his earplugs.
"Yeah?" Kyan asks, still not understanding the practicality.
"What?" Her father yells back at him with a confused frown.
"Yes!" Kyan yells back so he can hear.
"I'm just kidding I can read your lips," he says, laughing at his own joke. Kyan however is not enjoying the joke as much. "He uses similar methods as a hypnotist, except he has a much stronger hold over your mind and can make you do some of the worst things you can imagine. Or the best things depends on what kind of person the controller is," her father continues explaining.
"Sheesh, scary stuff." Kyan opens the container slowly and puts his own earplugs in.
"What do you think the robber wants?" Rebecca cuts into the conversation.
