Justin has proposed to study music and go to Berkley, claiming that I will do great there. I like the idea of going because it will mean I'll be with him and we won't separate nor be distant since Boston is really far and it will take almost a day to drive there from Atlanta. I can't afford flying every weekend, not even a couple of times a month. It would be very difficult for us. So the idea of being in the same college is great.
My dad places my plate in front of me, snapping me out of my thoughts, and I thank him. We eat our meals quietly but the bell interrupts us. My dad gets up to go get the door meanwhile I continue eating. My phone vibrates in my pocket but I ignore it. It's probably Kevin sending me silly pictures of silly animals. He has developed a liking towards animals in silly costumes and finds the need to share them with me. The first pictures were funny and cute but after ten pictures it got old.
I fear footsteps, more than just a pair meaning someone else is home. I keep eating and hear someone clear their throat from behind me. I grab the napkin and clean the corners of my lips before turning around to see who was at the door.
My eyes widen when I see the woman that abandoned us to go chase some guy she cheated on my dad with. My dad nervously stands behind her as she looks at me with a smile, making me sick. I can't believe that after all this time she has the nerve to come over and not look guilty for doing what she did but smile at us like everything is good and we are best friends.
"Hey sweetie, I have missed you." She says and I gasp.
"You have missed me?" I retort and push the chair back to get up and face her like I should.
"I know you are mad, but can we talk? I really want to talk to you and-"
"It has been four months since the last time I saw you and heard from you. Why do you think it's okay for you to just come over and ask to talk to me like nothing has happened? And mad? I'm not mad, I'm furious!" I glare at her and she nervously looks over to my dad whom has a sad look on his face.
"Can we please go to our living room and talk?"
"Our? This house stopped being ours the moment you made the decision to betray us." I walk past her and go to the living room. They follow me and I turn to look at her with an impatient look.
"Say what you want to say and leave." I cross my arms over my chest and take a deep breath.
"I'm moving to New York and I know how you always wanted to visit, so I was wondering if you wanted to stay with me over the summer. We could have a fresh start and go back to like how we used to." I look at her with a shocked look on my face and scoff.
"Like we used to? You mean like how you used to never approve me? Like when you were never satisfied with me since I wasn't the pretty and popular daughter you always wanted? I would love to go New York, but I would never go with you." I notice her suck her lower lip as she fidgets with her fingers and slowly nods her head. Huh, I guess I got that habit from her.
"I'm sorry for what happened. I never wanted it to be like that. I loved you and I still do, you are my daughter! And I know I wasn't the perfect mom and I want to try and fix it! Call me if you ever want to talk and change your mind, I will always be available for you." She heads to the door and my dad goes with her. I don't understand how my dad can be so calm and act so normally like nothing is wrong.
My dad returns to the living room and let's out a big sigh as he slumps on the couch behind him. He signals me to sit and I sit on the big couch, crossing my arms over my chest as I huff.
"I don't even know why I'm about to say this but I will say it," he rubs the back of his neck and exhales, "I think you should talk to her. I know she is not mom of the year, but I know her and she has a big ego and too much pride, so if she came and ask you to give her a chance it means she really is trying. In all these years I have known her she has never done that. You don't have to talk to her if you don't want to, I just wanted to put it out there." He gets up and goes back to the dinning room.
