'Mom...is gone.
She left us.
Mom said that she will come back, she promised.
Promises that had been made must be kept at all cost.
Did she lie?'
All sorts of thoughts went through the mind of the little child with striking red hair, standing beside his kneeling father.
The surrounding is silent, the atmosphere solemn.
The coffin infront of them contain the body of a beautiful woman with the same striking red hair.
'I pray day and night that she would return quickly, to come back and play with me.
But I didn't want her to return like this.
Her face look so stiff.
She didn't look at me.
Why?
Why why why?
Did I do something wrong?
Mom didn't leave us because of me right? '
The surrounding is silent, only the sound of weeps and sobs filled the area.
The quiet weepings coming from the count and the servants, except for one person.
The redhair boy- the only son of Count Deruth and Countess Jour, Cale Henituse- didn't cry nor throw a tantrum like how an 8-year-old child should.
The boy only stare- staring hard at the woman who's lying still inside the coffin. His eyes were hollow despite not shedding a tear.
"How creepy...why is he staring so hard like that?"
"Shh- he's just a child. He probably doesn't understand what's going on.."
"But shouldn't children this age usually start crying by now when their parent doesn't respond-?"
"Quiet-!"
The servants and maids that were whispering at the back didn't realised the child have hearing sharp enough to hear them despite the distance.
That's true.
Cale didn't cry.
He did not shed a single tear even when his mother's body is right in front of him.
But that doesn't mean he's not sad.
'...Mom broke her promise, but I atleast should keep mine. Mom said a big boy should be mature and help others. Now that mom isn't here... I should stop being childish.'
No tears left the child's eyes despite the deep sorrow he's feeling inside.
Instead, he turn to his father and place his hand on the back of the older man, gently patting to comfort.
The situation should be ridiculous.
The child comforting the father instead of the other way around.
But since the child doesn't even cry, no one think much of the situation.
As if it's natural- or better- that the child doesn't cry.
'...I hate rain...'
Since his mother died on a rainy day, and on the day of the funeral it was also raining, Cale Henituse starts disliking the rain that he used to love.
*****
"The young master is surprisingly mature! I thought he would start a tantrum when he see the countess like that, but he didn't even cry and even comfort the count!"
"Why are you so brazen today? It's like you're deliberatingly trying to rile people up. Just shut that mouth and do your work quietly."
The maids were chattering while doing their job like usual, walking through the garden behind the mansion as they carry the laundry in their hands.
"But... The young master is really...i dont know, off? Even if he wants to look strong in front of everyone, a kid is bound to cry once they see their mother getting buried right?"
"Is the young master more heartless than we thought? What a pity, he looks like a bright child, turns out he's a psycho-"
"You little-! Do not ever spout such nonsense within this place!"
"Eek-!"
The head maid who was behind the gossiping maids gave them a stern scolding, yet the maids with their heads lowered only roll their eyes.
Unbeknownst to them, a child was hiding behind the big bushes with his head hung low.
Cale, who was eavesdropping on the maids unintentionally, bite his lips while holding back his feelings.
'Am I really heartless for not crying? I thought I was being mature.. If I don't, who would? Da- father is acting unlike himself. Therefore I, as his only son, need to be there for him.'
I need to support him.
I need to be the person he can rely on right now.
I need to be mature.
This is the least I could do as a good son.
Cale held those words close to his heart, believing that only he can help his father.
'Don't worry mom.. I will be the son you can always be proud of.'
To be continued...
