Kala's POV:
I walked out of my small apartment building and headed to school. I was excited about the first day as a senior. Today will be perfect, I hope. I thought to myself.

Springfield High School was bustling with teachers and teenagers. Since it was the first day of school, all the teachers were standing by the entrance walking around to meet new students. The smiles plastered on the teachers faces looked fake. I laughed a little inside my head. They probably just want the school year to be over just as much as everyone else does. I thought to myself. I wouldn't want to deal with snobby teenagers all day. I would probably punch the first person who walked up to me.

Science, history, and math went by pretty fast. Soon I was with my friend Lily sitting down at lunch. "Hey, there's the popular group." She said making quotations with her fingers. The so called popular group was the group of typical teenagers who are always bullying anyone who walks by. If anyone sits at that table, they'll push them off the seat.

Half way into lunch, I hear a commotion beside me. I turn my head to see a 9th grader walk over to the popular table and sit at the table. The group just looks at each other and stares at him for a bit. The one closest to the boy, Shadow, (yea, weird name) then pushes him off. The food goes flying and he falls to the ground with a smack. He looks up at them like they just robbed a bank, Shadow in particular. He got up, brushed himself off, and ran away down one of the halls. Everyone else just carried on with their day. "I feel kinda bad for him. I mean, he is a new student." I told Lily. She nodded her head. I could see she looked sad, and I could understand why. The same thing happened to her.

I had just met Lily and we were walking over to the lunch tables. We saw an empty table and sat down. Before we even got to eat, a group of boys and girls came up to the table. "Uh, that's our table." Shadow said with disgust. The others nodded with approval. I couldn't stop the words from coming out. "Can we sit with you?" They just looked at each other like I was crazy. We were new to the school, we came 3 weeks late. So we didn't know much about Shadow and his crew. Without warning, he grabbed the collar of my shirt and yanked it. I flew forward onto the ground.

Lily on the other hand, stayed in her spot without getting out. "Lily, get out!" I yelled. She looked me straight in the eye, then looked at the group. "I'm not getting up until you say sorry to my friend." She crossed her arms and closed her eyes. Shadow rolled his eyes. Emerald, the girl behind him, started this time. "Oh please, we could just roll you into a ball and throw you across the school, wimp." The group cheered at her comeback. Lily still didn't budge at that. Sure enough, Shadow grabbed her and threw her on me. They took her and beat her up. I tried to stop them, but they just shooed me away. They wouldn't let me interfere. Soon the school nurse and the principal were there. The principle took the group to her office, and the nurse took Lily. I stood there with no food, no friend, and a bunch of people staring at me.

I snapped back to reality when the bell rang and Lily tapped me on the shoulder. "Come on, we gotta go." I got up and walked with her to our next class.

After that, school went by pretty fast. I was walking out of school when I heard someone call my name from behind me. "Kala, wait up!" I turned around to see a boy with brown hair and a bluish gray sweatshirt on. As he caught up to me, he must of seen the confusion on my face. "Your Kala, right?" He asked. "Yep."
"It is you!" He embraced me in a big hug. I pushed him away. "Dude, I don't even know who you are!" He blushed. "Oh, right. Sorry. Well my name's Jax. You probably don't remember me, do you?" He held out his hand. "No, but I like meeting new people!" I accepted it, and we started to walk out of school again. We talked about random topics like school and our pets. Before I knew it, I was at my apartment. I said bye and walked inside.

I was lying in bed, staring up at the ceiling. What he said earlier bugged me. You probably don't remember me, do you? His words flashed in my head. Was I supposed to remember him? Has it just been a long time? Why did he say that? The questions just kept coming. I looked over at my clock. 2:00 a.m. I shoved my face into my pillow and sighed.

I woke up again, my eyes stung from lack of sleep and my throat burned because I hadn't had water for about 10 hours. I got up and drank a cup of water and started to get ready for school. As I went to get my toast, I felt a burning sensation again in my throat. But this time, it was worse. It felt like fire was in there. I reached for my cup and put more water in it. I gulped it down, but the feeling only got worse. I gasped for air and dropped to the ground. My vision started to become blurry. I tried to scream for help, but no sound came out. I started to see black spots. I heard someone pounding on the door before I blacked out.
