Chapter 25

I walked through the hallway, my heels clicking against the expensive marble floor with a noise far too familiar. One I heard every day since I built my brand—or rather, my empire. I straightened my coat and brushed my hair back so it rested neatly behind my neck. I turned to my assistant, who stood tall beside me, though still slightly behind. We never walked side by side. Only my husband had the right to walk by my side, and even then, it was only because I was forced to let him.

He was nothing to me. Merely a way to get what I wanted. But he didn't necessarily need to know that.

In front of the public, we were one of the most well-known couples. One of the richest, too.

I heard my phone ringing inside my pocket and sighed as I glanced at the caller ID.

Mon amour.

I let out another sigh at the stupid nickname. One my husband had chosen for himself when we went on vacation to Paris.

I answered, annoyed, without stopping my walk.

"Good morning, my love!" I heard my husband's voice echo through the phone, and it already made my blood boil.

"Good morning, mon amour," I replied, faking an excited tone and forcing a smile onto my face—the kind of smile you could almost hear through a phone.

"I was just wondering if you were busy tonight?" he asked softly. I could hear him... rustling papers? Probably something work-related.

"Tonight?" I repeated, glancing at my assistant, who instantly showed me my schedule like a robot.

I looked at it. Technically, I was free, but... maybe I wouldn't be now.

"Yeah, I'm so busy. You know how work is."

My assistant gave me a questioning look, but it didn't take him long to understand. I had no secrets from him. He knew all about the attitude behind my fake smiles and everything that came with it.

He quickly tapped a few things on his tablet, probably scheduling me a meeting just so I could escape my husband.

"Again? My love, I told you last time, you need to make some time for yourself," he said in a worried tone.

Time for myself? Time with you isn't time for myself. It's a nightmare.

"I know, baby, but I have an important meeting with... investors. I can't miss it." I softened my voice, making it sound sweet and innocent.

"Mhh, alright. But make sure you make some time for us."

"Yeah, yeah, I will," I said, trying to dismiss the call. Maybe I was being too rude now. Just too bad.

"You seem busy. I'll call you later. Love you."

"Love you too. Byeee," I replied, closing my phone while rolling my eyes and slipping it back into my pocket.

I rolled my shoulders and cracked my neck before entering my office.

It was spotless. The janitor always made sure my office was deep-cleaned exactly the way I liked it. Still, he was careful not to touch anything unnecessarily. Everything had to remain exactly where I had left it.

Mostly because he knew what happened to the last one...

I took off my jacket and threw it onto the sofa. My assistant immediately picked it up and folded it properly.

I sat down in my chair, and he quickly placed the coffee he'd been holding this entire time on the table beside me.

"So... any news about that corporation that messed with our numbers last week?" I asked, picking up the coffee and blowing on it before taking a sip.
