Tadashi had been your first real love. You'd known him since you were kids. Growing up, you both had come to the realization that you were meant to be together. You had fun imagining what your wedding would be like when you were old enough.

When you were thirteen he suddenly moved away. Before he did, he left you with a beautiful ring on a chain.

"This is for you, (y/n). If you search me out, we can be married when the time comes. Will you do that for me?"

"Of course. I love you Tadashi."

You wore that necklace every day. Not a single day went by that you didn't think about him and the day you could be together again. You wrote letters to him every week and he wrote back. You soon realized that his replies began to come less and less until they stopped coming altogether.

In the letters from him, he described his family and day to day happenings. He got into a good college and his brother had problems with bot-fighting. In the last letter you got, he asked you to meet him at his aunt's café called The Lucky Cat Café when you arrived.

You anxiously awaited for your 18th birthday, when you could move to SanFransokyo with Tadashi. When the day arrived you were already packed and ready to go.

As you waved goodbye to your parents a twinge of sadness swept through you. You had never once thought about how far away you were really going. Your hand reached instinctively up to the dangling ring and you instantly brightened up. It had always been a source of comfort to you and a reminder of your promise to Tadashi.

This is worth it. I'll be with my love soon.

It took you several weeks to settle in and unpack. When you were done you tried to call the café to reach Tadashi but no one answered. You looked up the address and realized that it wasn't too far from your house.

You quickly grabbed your (f/c) jacket and slipped it over your shoulders as you stepped outside. You looked at your map again and started walking towards the café.

You were almost there when you heard a crash in an alley you passed. You quickly glanced down the alley and saw a small boy with dark hair laying against a bin. If you had to guess, you'd say the one of the two large men threw him there.

"We want our money." The taller one growled, stepping towards the by. The boy stood and looked as if he was about to throw himself at the man in a rage.

You knew you couldn't just watch so you raced down the alley towards them and stood between them. "Well aren't you a pretty one. We'll take care of you after him. Move out of the way." The man growled.

"I don't think so." You heard a laugh and had only seconds to react as a fist sped towards your face. You narrowly avoided it. He was off balance for a few seconds, long enough to knock him to the ground. The second was so surprised that he didn't see you as you sped up and kicked him between the legs.

Both were hunched over in pain. They looked at each other before shaking their heads and running away. "We'll be back for you runt." You watched them run and heard the boy behind you laugh.

"They shouldn't bother you for a while. Will you be okay?"

"Yeah, thanks. I'm Hiro, what's your name?"

"I'm (y/n)." You stopped as his name sunk in. "Wait, are you Tadashi's brother?" He looked down at the ground and nodded. "What's wrong? Did something happen to him?"

He nodded. "Let's go to my house and I'll explain there."

~oOo~

When you got back to your house you collapsed in a mess on your bed hugging a pillow to your chest. Tears streamed down your face. All this time he hadn't drifted away, he'd been dead. Hiro had explained the entire situation to you.

You couldn't believe that it could be true. You had desperately wanted to see Tadashi again. Now, you knew you'd never be able to.

~oOo~

You never quite got over Tadashi and you knew you never would. You also knew that no amount of mourning would bring him back so you tried to be strong and pretend it didn't bother you.

You had become close friends with Hiro as the months passed. His aunt had been kind enough to give you a job at the café and you were able to get into the same college as Hiro so you saw him most every day.

One afternoon you and Hiro were hanging out when he suddenly started to blush. "What is it Hiro?"

"I've been meaning to talk to you for a while now. It's just...well..."

"Yeah?"

"I love you!" He blurted out. "I need to know if you feel the same way." You were shocked. You had developed feelings for him as well but you still felt bound to Tadashi. You didn't know if you could love anyone in the same way.

When you didn't respond, he kissed you. You pulled away quickly.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have done that."

"No it's okay. I like you too but..."

"But you still miss Tadashi. I understand." He stood there embarrassed. Neither of you said anything for several minutes.

"I'm sorry, I have to go." You rushed out of the room without glancing back at Hiro.

~oOo~

After leaving Hiro, you went straight to Tadashi's grave. You'd been there a few times to get worries off your chest and just to be near him. This time you fingered the ring before deciding to take it off and setting it on the gravestone.

"I'm sorry Tadashi I've started to like your brother. I feel horrible because I still love you. I'm bound to you and I don't want to let you go, not yet. There is a place in my heart dedicated for you."

A single tear escaped and trailed down your face. You thought you were imagining it when you saw a faint outline of Tadashi appear. He solidified in front of you making you freeze. As he appeared you also saw a red string stretched out between you, connecting your souls.

"Don't cry, (y/n). I'm here." He smiled at you and you felt your heart grow warm.

"I'm so sorry."

"I heard you, (y/n). I've heard you every time you've come here. I don't want to hold you back anymore."

"What do you mean?"

He reached out and much to your surprise, touched your face. He wiped the tear off your face. "I want you to live your life how you please. If that means dating Hiro, go ahead. You are no longer bound to me. I let you go." The string began to fade between you and he planted a kiss gently on your lips.

He started to fade himself. "Please don't go!"

"I love you, (y/n)" With those last words lingering in the air, he completely faded, leaving you staring at the empty air. Tears streamed down your face. You weren't sad though. You were happy to have seen him one last time before he was gone for good.
