You'd first met him when Tadashi had introduced him to you. Tadashi had been your friend since you were young so any friend of his was a friend of yours. When you'd met Wasabi, he had felt like more than just a friend.
It hadn't taken you long to notice that Wasabi had feelings for you as well. Neither of you said anything but only continued to grow closer.
On a whim you had approached him and confessed your true feelings. To your surprise he confessed that he liked you as well.
After several dates you felt that something was off with Wasabi. Figuring that Tadashi would know, you asked him.
"He didn't tell you?"
"Tell me what?"
Tadashi sighed and you caught a sad look in his eyes. "Before you met him, he was with another woman. He loved her with all of his heart but she was suddenly taken away from him in a car crash."
"That's terrible. Why wouldn't he tell me that?"
"He never got over her. To be honest, I'm surprised that he opened up to you at all."

After talking to Tadashi, you were more aware of Wasabi. You noticed that every time he looked at you, that sadness crossed his face.
You knew he would never get over her but you loved Wasabi. To be with him was enough for you.
You were okay with it, but after a year it started to become painful for you. He wouldn't love you like he loved her.
"Wasabi, I need to tell you something."
"What is it, (y/n)? Is something wrong?" He seemed concerned and stood before you, ready to hear what you had to say.
"Even though you never told me, I've known about the girl you were with before me. Tadashi told me about her so I've known for a while now."
He bowed his head and looked at the ground. "I'm sorry I never told you. It just hurt too much to talk about her. I'm over her though. I love you (y/n)"
"I don't think you are. When you look at me all you see is her, it hurts. Don't try to deny it because I can see it your eyes." He didn't respond nor did he look directly at you. You decided to continue.
"At first I thought I could live with it because I was by your side and that was good enough for me. But it started to hurt too much. I know that I can't compete with a memory and that I can't and will never be he. I will always love you, but you will always love her, I am okay with that."
He finally looked at you, tears gathering at the corners of his eyes before spilling down his cheeks. "I'm so sorry, (y/n). I never wanted you to be her. You're so similar but I know that you're not her."
"To prevent either of us from being hurt any more, I'm leaving."
He was shocked and pulled you into a tight hug. You pulled away and looked him in the eyes. "I am well aware that I was just here to distract you from the grief for a while. That's okay. I realize now that my love was not enough for the both of us. I'm sorry."
You pulled him into a gentle kiss before turning away and quickly walking from the room. You didn't once look back. You didn't want him seeing the tears that had begun cascading down your cheeks.
