Chapter Sixteen:
I gasped, setting up on the bed, beads of sweat rolling down my forehead. Heavy breathes came out of my mouth, as my heart was beating fast. It was just a nightmare... Zombies attacked me, and tore me to peaces... I looked around, everyone was a sleep, and it was dawn. Chris was supposed to be guarding, but he also was in deep sleep on the window chair. I stood up, and walked to him slowly. An evil laugh echoed in my mind, and I slapped his cheek. Preparing my self to his attack, I was shocked that he didn't move at all, still asleep! I tsked, rolling my eyes... I wanted to have some fun.
I checked the clock hanging on the wall, and it was 5 in the morning. I felt my bladder heavy, and decided to go the bathroom. It was creepy, most of the candles were off, but the ones in the bathroom were lightened, so I finished my business, and walked out.
It was silent, and lonely. I sighed, my feet making sounds as I walked on the wooden floor. The living room was big, so I slumped in the leather couch.
Suddenly, I heard a voice outside the apartment, and I jumped to my feet, my blood running cold in my veins. "Chris!" I called out in a whisper, "if you're trying to mess with me, I swear I will kill you!"
There was another voice, and I looked around, no one was there! My hands started trembling, and I started panting. "Hello?" My voice came out shaky, and cracking, laced with fear.
Finally, I realized that it was from the hallway outside, so I walked to the door, and looked through the eyehole at the hallway. My eyes widened, and my jaw dropped, fear spreading through my veins causing my heart to race, and air getting knocked out of my lungs... There was a zombie roaming around in front of the door. It had blood dripping from its half ripped face, it made me sick. It suddenly lifted his head, and looked at the door, making my blood freeze. I walked away from the door, slowly and quietly, and headed to the room. I shut the door, and locked it, sighing and resting my head on it.
We are in trouble.

"We will kill it on our way!" Derek shrugged.
"How are you so cool with it?" I frowned.
"We locked the entrance of the building, but didn't check each apartment! The doors were all closed, so we thought that no zombies will be able to come out of the rooms!" Christi explained.
"And if any came out, we will be able to kill it easily, since there's not too many apartments in this building," Chris added.
I sighed, rubbing my forehead tiredly. "Anyway, are we ready to go?" I asked, standing up, with a shotgun in my hands.
Derek nodded, "lets go."
"Okay guys, distract them well, and for God's sakes don't do what I did!" I said, pulling Christi to a hug. "And don't be scared, we will be fine!" I embraced Jacob.
"Be careful, please!" He whispered.
"I will," I smiled, kissing his cheek. I straightened my back, walking next to Derek. "Lock the doors!" Was the last thing I ordered before we headed out of the room.
"It's right there," I whispered to Derek, who nodded, holding the biggest knife we had. He put his index finger on his lips, telling me to be silent. He slowly walked to the zombie, who I had seen the night before. In a fast move, the zombie fell to the ground, with its skull opened. Derek smiled smugly, and wiped away the blood from the knife.
"We have to call you Derek the zombie slayer!" I giggled.
"Thank you," he grinned. We continued our way out of the building, and into the road, locking the gate behind us. "We should be quiet," he whispered, and I nodded, following behind him.
It was empty, bags and garbage sliding in the streets with the wind, along with the dancing leaves on the trees. It was... Quiet. The voice of Christi's yells of distraction was a bit hearable from our position. We started walking silently, but fast, our weapons in our hands. I admit, it is quite scary to be walking in a zombie land!
I kept my eyes wide opened, and looked around once in a while. Derek signaled me to go from a street, and I followed. There were cars, and we started checking them. They were either locked, or wrecked.
We passed by a store, and I stopped in my way, looking inside. There were snacks, and food! I nudged Derek, and he looked inside.
"We need food, we are running out if supplies!" I said in a low voice, even though the street was empty, but we needed to be careful!
"I'll guard, and you shop the fastest you could!" He whispered.
I nodded, getting in the shop as Derek stood at the door, with his gun ready. It was a really small shop, the size of a bedroom! It had canned food, and water bottles, also snacks. I opened my bag, stuffing it with as much as I could.
I was stealing! I couldn't believe it! But that's probably how it goes from now on... Anyway, as I looked around, a red packet of candy caught my attention... Skittles! Jacob's favorite candy! It would be good, since it was his birthday!
I snatched a few packets, and put them inside the bag. I looked around, everything needed was taken. Just in time, Derek turned to me.
"Zombies!" He whispered, and I ran out the shop with him.
There were a couple of zombies turning around a building. Thankfully, they didn't see us, since we hid behind a wall in an alley. "Damn! Now what?!" I groaned.
"We just have to keep searching for cars!" He said. I gave him a worried look, but he smiled warmly, calming my nerves. He grabbed my hand, and we ran in the alley to the safe side, meeting cars. We started checking in them, but when we were about to give up, Derek gestured his hand for me to check out a car. It was a black Land Rover, and to our luck, there was a key in it! His face lightened like a kid at Christmas, and I grinned.
"Get in," he slammed the driver's seat door shut, and I climbed in the passenger's seat. I immediately checked the back seat... Empty.
Derek drove silently in the streets, avoiding any zombie we notice. Safely, we reached the building.
"Go call them, I will guard the car," he said.
"No!" I frowned, "what if you got attacked?!"
"I won't, I will fight them, now go! Get them!" He pushed me a bit. I took I a deep breath, kissed his cheek, and walked out of the car.
I got inside the building, getting up the stairs two at a time. As soon as I got in the hallway in which the apartment was at, I gasped. There was a zombie in front of the door, and apparently, it heard my voice because it turned to me, and growled.
"Guys!" I shouted, "it's Ash, open!"
Suddenly, it attacked me. I got pushed to the wall, and started fighting with the zombie. I was able to grab my knife, and pin the creature to the wall, switching our positions. It tried to reach me, my hand pierced through the zombie's skin. I touched something hard, and grimaced in disgust, "seriously?!" I managed to wrap my hand around it, his throat, and pulled it out, snapping it's neck. It fell to the ground, lifeless. "EW!" I yelled, dropping it's esophagus from my hand. I shook the blood away, knocking on the door repeatedly. They opened it, and I frowned, looking at a grinning Jacob, "look what I found!" He was holding an ax... "That would've been very useful if only you opened earlier!" I rolled my eyes, "now we need to go!"
"You found a car?" Christi asked.
I nodded, started to walk away. Suddenly, a growl came from behind us, and there were five zombies. We all screamed in unison starting to run. The level bellow, there was a zombie. The ground floor, there were three zombies!
We screamed, dodging the undeads' attacks. They were on our tail! Chris managed to kill one, but they were too many!
Derek surprised me at the gate, he looked pale. "We have to leave at this second," he breathed. "They heard you!"
And by that, we climbed in the car. As soon as I buckled my seatbelt, I looked ahead, my heart dropping to the ground. "Go!" I screamed, "now!"
He drove off, passing by the herd of flesh tearing, meat devouring creatures, and to San Francisco to get my mom.
