Chapter Thirty-Five:
A shiver ran down my spine as the midnight wind rushed against us. My lip was quivering, and it was either from the cold, or crying. My tears rolled down my cheeks like rivers.
"We," I sobbed, "we're so c-close!"
"Mom," Jacob looked at me with glassy eyes, "please stop crying!"
My heart broke hearing his voice, so I pulled him into a hug, feeling my baby's heart beats. The sound of repeated stabbing echoed... Christi was repeatedly piercing her knife in the skulls of bodies, letting all the anger out. Derek was at the corner of the roof, on his knees, staring down at the streets. Every few minutes his whispers would echo, "I want to die."
"Come, you asshole!" Christi's shout rose, but I didn't spare a glance... The roof's door was wide opened, barely any zombies left... Not because they left, but because Christi killed them all. So much anger is inside that girl.
I heard shuffling, so I looked to see Derek standing up, and storming towards Christi and the walkers, and joined her with the killing. I just held Jacob still, he was slowly drifting to sleep. He was exhausted from the amount of tears he spilt... I was too, but couldn't close my eyelids for a split second.
I just watched the battle... How did we reach such a world?! How did everything vanish this fast? Between night and dawn, the world turned into a zombie land... Just death, and war, a struggle to survive! My last year in college has been a waste... Jacob's school, my college, our jobs... Are all gone! Everyone, my classmates, my relatives, my mom, and friends, they are all dead!
Jacob was the only person preventing me from killing myself, he needs me, so I'll protect him with all the power left in me.
The roof's door got slammed shut, snapping me out of my thoughts. Derek rested his head against it, breathing heavily, and Christi kept stabbing a zombie, sending him to the ground, dead, and then she burst into tears.
"Why?" She sobbed, making my heart throb. "Why did this happen?!"
"Christi," Derek turned to her, sighing, "calm down."
"Calm down my ass," she shouted, trembling and crying.
He took a deep breath, and walked to her, engulfing her, "it's okay."
She fell to the ground with him, both were surrounded by dead bodies. Her sobs tore my heart, and then Derek looked up, his eyes staring into mine, and a tear rolled down my face... His eyes were watery, and glinting under the moon's light.
"Why did all of this happen?" Christi whispered, "Chris, my parents, they are all gone! I have no one left!"
"C," my voice broke, "we are still with you!" I said, rocking Jacob back and forth, soothing his sleeping body.
"We will be alright," Derek spoke.
"But the rescue is gone!" She cried.
"We will survive without them, we will find a way out on our own."
I shook my head, staring at the sky filled with stars.
There's no such thing as escaping, and surviving in the zombie land on your own.
I looked at Derek as he mumbled soothing words for Christi. His parents died in a car crash when he was 13, he was the only child, so he lived with his aunt, then moved out when he turned 18, then she passed away... Even though they died, but their death was better than getting torn apart alive... Like how Chris and his parents died.
Christi informed us that he tripped while being chased by the herd, the zombies caught up, he couldn't get away in time... The walkers finished him while Jacob and Christi escaped. If my son was the one who died, I wouldn't be living right now, so Christi is the strongest person ever for still surviving till now.
