The air in the kitchen of L'Aurore always tasted of salt, roasted garlic, and the sharp, bright cut of emulsified butter. It was a precise, high-pressure machine, operating under the heavy weight of three Michelin stars and a reputation that reached every corner of the culinary world. At the center of the organized chaos stood Roseanne, her blond hair pinned up loosely, eyes sharp as she inspected a pair of pan-seared duck breasts resting under the heat lamps.
"More micro-herbs on table four, Bambam. Watch the edge of the plate, Jinyoung, keep it clean," Roseanne instructed, her voice calm but undeniable.
Around her, the kitchen moved in an orchestrated rhythm. Jackson was barking timing from the prep station, Momo and Dahyun were artfully plating desserts with steady hands, while Tzuyu and Jeongyeon maintained the line with effortless precision. Every plate passed through Roseanne. She tasted every reduction, checked every sear, and adjusted every garnish until the final order went through the heavy double doors.
By the time the last ticket was cleared, the energy in the kitchen slowly settled into a comfortable exhaustion. The staff broke into relaxed conversations, wiping down stainless steel surfaces and discarding their aprons.
The kitchen doors pushed open, and Mina stepped in with a knowing, playful tilt to her lips. As head manager, Mina usually brought the night's final reports, but tonight, she held no tablet.
"Everyone is cleared out, Chef," Mina said, resting a hand on her hip. "Except for one last customer in the private dining nook. She insists on speaking only with the head chef and owner."
A sudden wave of quiet hit the line, followed by instant, low chuckles. Jackson snorted, Jeongyeon looked away with a grin, and Bambam nudged Jinyoung's shoulder.
"Oh, a very special guest, huh?" Jackson teased, crossing his arms.
"Don't keep her waiting, Chef. We know how strict your private service rules are," Dahyun added with a giggle.
Roseanne shook her head, a quiet smile threatening to break through her cool demeanor. She untied her apron and tossed it onto the stainless steel counter, waving her hands to shoo them all toward the staff exit.
"Alright, that is enough out of all of you. Go home. Clean up and get out, I have this handled."
Mina lingered by the door, a faint smirk playing on her face. "Do you want me to bring the late-night dessert menu out to her?"
"No need," Roseanne replied softly, smoothing down her black chef jacket. "I already know exactly what she wants. You can head out too, Mina. I'll lock up."
Once the kitchen emptied into complete silence, Roseanne went to work. There were no orders fired, no tickets printed. She moved around the stove from memory, selecting fresh ingredients with practiced ease. Within twenty minutes, she carried a single covered plate out into the dimly lit, vaulted dining room.
The restaurant was silent, bathed in the warm glow of low amber lamps. Sitting at the back nook was a figure framed by the massive arched window that overlooked the city skyline. She wore a dark ruby, backless silk dress that caught the soft light. One delicate hand held a glass of red wine, sipping it slowly, while her cheek rested comfortably against her knuckles.
Roseanne cleared her throat gently, stopping a few feet away. "Shouldn't you be resting at your wondrous penthouse, Miss Kim?"
Jennie turned around slowly. Her eyes were painted in deep, smoldering smokey shades, but the moment her gaze landed on Roseanne, the red-carpet composure melted away into a sweet, familiar gummy smile.
"Not if I see my best friend first," Jennie said, her voice dripping with playful accusation. "You owe me for leaving me all alone early this morning."
Roseanne rolled her eyes, though her expression was entirely fond. She stepped forward and set the plate down in front of her. The lid was lifted to reveal a steaming, rich dish of creamy truffle pasta, made precisely the way Jennie loved it—comforting, indulgence in a bowl.
