The car ride home was silent.
Not the comfortable kind, but the kind that pressed against Jennie’s ribs, filling every space where words wanted to exist and didn’t dare to. Jisoo drove.
Both hands on the wheel. Eyes steady on the road. Her jaw was set in that familiar way when she was already forming questions but choosing the right moment to ask them.
Irene sat in the passenger seat, posture straight, legs crossed, and gaze forward. But the faint reflection in the window betrayed her. Her eyes flicked not to the road, but backward towards Jennie.
Yeri sat beside her, phone resting uselessly on her thigh. She glanced at Irene. Irene glanced back. They shared a look. Did something happen? Should we ask? Not here.
Jennie noticed. Of course she did.
She kept her eyes on the city lights streaking past the window, fingers loosely laced together on her lap. Her heart had settled but her thoughts hadn’t. They circled, slow and curious, like they were orbiting something they didn’t yet understand.
The blonde woman’s voice replayed in her head.
Low. Controlled. Not demanding.
The space she gave her lingered more than any touch could have.
No one spoke.
The car eventually slowed in front of the house. Irene shifted first, breaking the spell.
“We’re here,” she said gently.
Jisoo parked and turned off the engine.
“Text us when you’re inside,” Yeri added, forcing a small smile. “Okay?”
Jennie nodded. “Okay.”
Irene studied her for a second longer than necessary, then nodded once like she’d decided to trust whatever silence Jennie was carrying.
The door closed. The car pulled away.
Inside, the house felt impossibly quiet.
Jennie changed into her pajamas; soft cotton, pale-colored, something comforting and familiar. She didn’t turn on the lights in her room. Instead, she walked straight to the window.
Moonlight spilled in, cool and silver, tracing the edges of her face and shoulders. She leaned against the glass, forehead resting lightly, eyes unfocused.
A knock came a few minutes later.
“Jen?” Jisoo’s voice.
“Yeah.”
The door opened slowly.
Jisoo stopped short.
Jennie stood bathed in moonlight, arms crossed loosely, expression distant not upset, not shaken. Just thoughtful.
Jisoo leaned against the doorframe. “You look like you’re about to confess to a crime.”
Jennie huffed softly. “I don’t even know what I’d confess.”
Jisoo stepped closer, sitting on the edge of the bed. “You’ve been quiet since we left.”
Jennie didn’t answer right away. Then–
“I’m not sure what happened.”
Jisoo blinked. “That’s new.”
Jennie turned slightly. “She didn’t flirt with me.”
“The blonde?” Jisoo asked.
Jennie nodded. “She didn’t touch me. Didn’t corner me. Didn’t even try to pull me away.” Her brows furrowed. “She just intervened. And then left.”
