"Why do I have to get the crap beaten out of me?" I asked Natasha as we practiced our combat in the training room. It had been almost 24 hours since the warning of Loki's attack was raised and still nothing. No one knew what he was waiting for and Thor assured us he hadn't attacked Asgard.
"Because if we want Loki to come and save you, you have to look like you're actually in danger." She replied.
"Can't you just point a gun to my head or something?" I whined.
"Do you really think Loki would believe that? He knows you would be strong enough to get out." I knew she was right, but for some reason having my face beaten in still made me anxious.
The door to the training room opened and in strolled Tony, Steve and Clint. Tony was eating and talking to Clint and Steve who both looked like he was trying to ignore him.
"Okay, but can you give me like a five minute warning before you beat me up so I can mentally prepare myself?" I jokingly asked Natasha. She laughed lightly and nodded before wandering off to train with Clint.
I walked over to my bag and grabbed my water bottle, taking a long drink. I watched as Tony continued to talk Steve's ear off about nuclear-astrophysics. I wandered over to him.
"You want to have a quick spar?" I asked, interrupting Tony. Steve nodded like he was grateful to get away from Tony. "Weapons or no weapons?"
"Well I need to warm up first so I guess no weapons." He replied.
I smiled a positioned myself, I nodded to let Steve know I was ready and in heartbeat Steve came charging at me. He threw a punch, which I dodged and backed away, I was beginning to feel like I had bitten of more than I could chew. But it was too late to back out now.
Blocking more punches than I could throw, I could feel the impending doom that I was going to get hurt. Bam! Right in the ribs. I doubled over, slightly winded, but I played it up more by letting out a sob.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean it." Said Steve, rushing over to me. As soon as he was close enough I swung my leg out, knocking him flat on his back. I quickly pinned him down and laughed.
"That's not fair." He whined.
"All's fair in love I war." I smirked. He smiled and shoved me off him. Tony seemed happy at the little show.
"You're turn Tony?" I joked.
"Oh no sweetheart, I wouldn't want to put you through that shame." He replied. I laughed lightly.
"Yeah, you wish." Tony raised his eyebrow at the challenge, but before he could reply Maria Hill ran into the room with a dire look on her face. The look in her eye was enough to tell us what was happening. Without saying a word we all began rushing around, gathering everything we would need.
Within several minutes, we were clambering into the back of a jet. Coulson was already on board, waiting to debrief us. Clint and Natasha began piloting the jet as Coulson began informing us of the situation.
"There is no sign of Loki, but there have been reports of several giants wandering through Central Paark, people have claimed that they have simply wandered out of the water in Central Park Lake." He said as he fiddled with a tablet, turning the screen to face us, there were several photos and clips of footage of Frost Giants emerging from the lake.
"How the hell?" I muttered to myself.
"We had readings from a satellite of spikes in power all over the lake. The readings are the same as the ones Jane Foster was researching." Informed Coulson.
"The whole lakes a portal?" I asked and Coulson nodded.
"From what we know, the portal spots are ever changing. Loki must have found one big enough and enhanced it with the help of the Casket to make it stay open longer and grow larger." Coulson replied.
I felt sick, but that might have been from the jet suddenly dropping as we got closer to New York. The outline of the city was fast approaching. Just then, the screen Coulson was holding flashed red as it showed and update. Several Chituri soldiers had come through the portal and where shooting at civilians.
"Stark, Thor." Said Coulson. Both nodded, already knowing what he was going to say. Natasha lowered the back of the jet and in seconds the two men where flying ahead of us. I watched them disappear into the city and it finally dawned on me how serious this had become. I must have looked like I was about to faint because Steve came and sat down beside me.
"You Look a little worried?" Said Steve, I nodded.
"I may have, kinda, sort of, just realized how stupid I've been and how terrified I actually am." I admitted.
"Well, it's about time." He joked, trying to lighten the mood. "Don't worry, as long as we stick together as a team, everyone will be okay." I nodded, but remained unconvinced.
I looked out the front window again. I watched a small figure shoot up and hover above the city, shooting anything the looked like it was about to leave Central Park. In mere moments, we began lowering into the park, Steve handed me an earpiece, before turning and jumping out of the back of the jet. I put it in and switched it on.
"Well, are you coming?" Steves voice was as clear as day in my ear. I smiled, something inside me kicked into gear.
What the hell? I thought as I followed after Steve.
I landed on the ground with a thud and assessed the scene around me. Forming a long, double ended sword of ice, I began attacking the closest monster to me.
Swiftly dancing the blood ballet, it wasn't long before the park was littered with bodies. The smell of death was beginning to become overwhelming, but none of seemed bothered by it. I pulled my blade from the body of a frost giant just as the ground began to quake. Struggling to keep my balance, I heard an estranged roar from behind me. I turned to see a massive beast protrude from the middle of the lake. It flew straight into the sky with extreme force, it looked like some sort of dark and twisted whale. Water and dirt sprayed out everywhere, landing all over me.
"And now there's that thing." I muttered to myself. "Does anyone have any ideas on how to shut the portal down?" I yelled into the earpiece.
"We can hear you fine, there's no need to yell." Replied Tony.
"Sorry. So no ideas?" I asked.
"Last time we had to shut down the Teseract that was powering the portal." Replied Natasha. I listened intently but ran back into the fight, as Steve looked a bit overwhelmed. "But this time, the portals power is on the other side."
"I can see how that could be an issue." I muttered, as I fought off another frost giant. I thought about it for a moment.
"You said the portals where ever changing, right?" I asked again.
"Someone said something like that." Replied Steve. I looked at the portal and the continuous flow of aliens.
"I think I have an idea." I said.
