~Ryker POV~
After I had taken a trip to the stupid bar, I had somehow managed to stumble home, pretty wasted. A few girls had tried to make moves on me, but one growl and they backed off real fast. Where had I gone wrong? Shuffling my way back to my room slowly. I peek at the clock. 8.43.
Wonderful, seventeen minutes until Kimbriella got to reject me in front of the pack, and I look and feel like trash. I don't even know if I can stand her rejecting me at all, much less in front of other people, and forget about the whole pack. From the looks of it, her door was still locked, so I decide to knock on it, make sure she's ready. Get if over with as fast as possible.
''Kim?'' I call softly, trying to keep my voice from cracking. I couldn't call her Kimbriella. I couldn't. It was too.. initmate. There was no response. ''It's about time for the... thing. You ready?'' Still none. ''Seriously, if you don't respond, I'm coming in.''
It's starting to freak me out now. I shove my shoulder against the door, and it quickly falls to desperate charges. ''Kim?'' The room is empty, and the window is open. She's gone. I slam my fist into the wall with such force it makes a fist-shaped indentation. I see a piece of paper, smack dab in the center. Curiously, I amble over, my foot staining bits of the carpet a lovely crimson color. Picking it up, I read the first line.
Please, everyone, only read the section with your name, or else Brinley will hurt you.
I skim the list until I find my name, last. What's that supposed to mean? Warily, I begin reading, expecting some insult, icing on the pain and humilation cake, the rejection she had spoke of in writing instead of out loud. Instead I get two lines.
Ryker; It's not your fault. I'm sorry.
What the heck was that supposed to mean?
''Ryker?'' I whirl around, clutching the note behind my back.
''Mom.'' I say, relaxing.
''Let me see it.''
''See what?''
She rolls her eyes. ''Ryker, I'm your mother. You can't hide things from me. Give me the paper''
Reluctantly, I hand it over. I see her scan it quickly. To my confusion, her eyes begin to moisten with tears. I snatch the note away, determined to read whatever had made my mother cry. ''Don't you dare.'' My mother growls, slapping my hand with such force the note flutters to the ground.
''What did you do Ryker? You look guilty.'' Looking around the mess in the room.
''The wall.'' I frown, pointing at the indentation of my fist.
'''What am I going to do with you?'' She sighs, throwing her hands up. ''Goddess help this poor idiot.''
''Mother!'' I gape.
''Oh, hush.'' She scolds, eyes shiny with tears again. ''I could've had a daughter-in-law.''
''Are you saying it's my fault?'' I demand, feeling myself getting angry to the point of shifting and unable to stop it.
''Heavens, no.'' She laughs and I raise an eyebrow. ''I'm saying that's why I'm crying. So there's no need for you to read the note.''
''I'm sorry.'' I murmur awkwardly.
''Don't be sorry!'' She scoffs, walking out the door. ''Just get her back!''
''She made it very clear that was the exact opposite of her every intention.'' I growl. My mother shrugs.
''I didn't raise you to give up. If you love her, don't let her go.''
Lacking a response, I glare at her mutely. She smiles, her curtain of brown hair falling over one eye before she tosses it away and exits. Less than a minute later, Brinley walks in, and promptly scoops up the note.
''You talked to my mother?''
''Yeah. Go away, I have express permission to hurt you. Leave!''
''That's only if-''
''Shut up and go.''
She furrows her eyebrows, completely floored at this lack of respect, I leave. I storm down the steps and out the back door to my wood pile, literally ripping my shirt off, and begin to chop like crazy.
~~~~~
''Hey. You.'' Since I'm the only person out here currently, I stop chopping the woods.
''What?'' I hiss, turning around, facial expression definitely conveying my annoyance. Brinley laughs. ''Forget about your man period for one second and listen, you dingbell.''
I open my mouth to say something, but she continues. ''I don't wanna hear about whoever pissed in our Cheerios, just listen.''
I nod.
''Good!'' She smiles brightly, clapping her hands. ''Okay, here it is: You are a total idiot.''
''I am not talking to you!'' I yell, my voice getting embarrassingly high pitched. She snickers. I glare back at her. ''Yes you are.'' She narrows her eyes, getting close and pokes my chest for emphasis. ''You.Are.Really.Stupid.''
''Okay, fine! Hit me with it, why am I stupid.''
''A lot of reasons, but one main one. You must be the most idiotic person I have ever met if you seriously believe that Kimbriella doesn't care for you.''
I stare at her, open mouthed. She smiles. ''Really idiot, think bat to that night.''
I know exactly which night she's talking about and I shake my head. ''No.'' I say stubbornly.
''Yes. Shove away your own emotions and focus on hers. Or however the mate bond works.''
''Why?'' I glare at her. ''What good will that do?''
''Since, the mate bond doesn't lie.''
''I never loved you'' The words hit me like a ton of bricks, and yet I feel the hurt radiating off her too. Notice for the first time the unshed tears shining in her beautiful eyes.
''She felt hurt too.'' I whisper.
''Now you get it,'' She says. ''Something obviously happened, and it had nothing to do with you.''
I bit my lip, wondering what had happened.
''SO we are going to find her, and figure it out? You in this?'' She extends a hand,her eyes full of hope. I grab her hand and shake it, determined. '"Deal.''
