~Kimbriella POV~
''So..'' I drawl, shutting the door to Brinley's room behind me. ''You and Decker, huh? What did I tell you?'' She stops staring out the window to look at me.
''I don't know.'' She whispers, biting her lip, looking uncertain. Since i was expected smart-aleck reply, this takes me by surprise.
''Spill it.'' I urge. She takes a deep breath, chest shuddering like it always does when you struggle not to cry. After composing herself, she continues. After all, my news could wait.
''Well.. he.. ugh.. Let me try again.'' She rakes a hand through her hair.
''So.. I was determined to never feel a thing for him, that's, nothing but dislike and annoyance and indifference and anger, and.. well.. you know what I mean. But instead, one look at his gorgeous face and those.. oh, goodness gracious, those eyes of his, and all my caution, my good sense just flies out of my head, you know?''
Before I can reply that yes, indeed, I do know having experiences the same thing, she goes on.
''And.. you know me, and you the down and dirty past. My dad. His drinking and gambling. At least..'' She stops to breathe.
'' At least he never hit us. And I'm grateful for that. And because of my caution of all guys I assumed that they were all the same. But then I see how Ryker treats you, how Trey treats Cynthia, how most of the males treat their mates. With respect, with love. And I've never wanted it before, heck, as much as I flirt and notice guys with nice faces. I've never, ever, ever liked someone before, never had a crush or whatever you call it. Then Decker comes along, darn it all, and I have the opportunity to take a chance and jump.''
She breaths again and looks at me. I smile and motion for her to continue.
'' Because if my lack of self-restraint and the tingles when he touches me are any indicator, I'm falling. Hard. And I want it! I want that love, that passion, that relationship. But.. I just.. don't want to get hurt. And..'' Shame washed over her face. ''When he finds out that I've never had a boyfriend, never even been kissed.. oh, goodness. It'll be so embarrassing.'' She finally stops here, and I try to comprehend everything I've just heard.
''He won't mind. I have to admit, when I first met Decker, I thought he was a player, and an idiot. But since he's been around you.. Djeez.. Brinley. He's a real gentleman. And I know that he would never ruin his chances with you and go beyond his boundaries. No way, no how And besides, he doesn't have to know that yet.''
''So I'm not stupid? For throwing away all my years of hard work, all the walls? Bree, when I saw you falling so fast for Ryker, I was confused. You're a stubborn girl, and you've never been one to give up easily. But I could see Ryker chipping away at your walls of self-restraint, a little every day. And I thought This is ridiculous. And now that it's my life, I haven't even lasted a week before giving in!'' She ends breathlessly.
''No way. You're not stupid, and Decker's not your dad.''
''That's nice to hear.'' She sighs deeply. ''Speaking of my dad, when you were gone, we were searching for you. Ryker thought it would be a good idea to check my house, so we went.. and my dad was there.''
That makes me mad. That makes me really mad. The shatter a mirror, fist trough the drywall kind of mad.
''He didn't.''
''He did.''
''What did he want?''
''He apologized. He seemed nice.. And my mom.. well, I thought she would be the last one to ever forgive him. But I don't know if I'm ready for that.''
''No one's asking you to be.'' I soothe.''
''You always know just what to say.'' She smiles.
''You and Decker need to have a talk sometimes.''
She gives me a funny look. ''About what?''
''Not my place to tell you. Just a nice heart to heart about all your feelings. Now's as good of a time as any.''
''Uh.. Alright.'' She glares at me suspiciously but takes the hint. ''Hey, why did you come here in the first place?''
I grin, the smile I'd been holding in spreading across my face. I hold out my hand for her to see, and she screams, an ear-shattering sound that likely shakes the whole house, and impressive feat considering its size. I wouldn't be surprised if it breaks a few glass windows.
''HE FINALLY PROPOSED! WELL IT'S ABOUT TIME! TELL ME EV-ER-Y-THING!'' She enunciates each loud syllable.
''Well..'''
''Kim?'' Ryker stepped up, placing a hand on my shoulder.
''Holy crap!'' My hand flies to my chest. ''You scared me!''
He laughs, a nervous little laugh. He's not usually nervous. This is kind of suspicious.
''You okay?'' I ask.
His hand slides to his pocket, and I can see his fingers wiggling through the fabric of his shorts.
''Uh... yeah.'' He inhales deeply.'' Well.. no.'' He rubs the back of his neck with his other hand. ''Well.. mayby.''
''Are you okay, or not?'' I roll my eyes expectantly.
''Depends on your answer to my question.'' He pulls out a ring.
