The next morning, Taylor had gone home to take a shower and get more clothes while Karlie was walking the halls with one of the therapists.
"HI KARLIE."
A familiar voice yelled out to her from behind. As she turned around, she saw her young friend Michael. He had a mask over his nose and mouth and although she couldn't see his smile, she knew he had one because of the sound of his voice and the twinkle in his eye. He too was walking around, pushing his IV stand with his mom by his side.
"Hi Michael. It's nice to see you. Where are you off to?" Karlie asked.
"I was going down to the computer room with my mom. Want to come?"
"I'd love to."
The two walked slowly, side by side, as they made their way to the room. Inside were four computers, a couch, two chairs, a tv mounted to the wall and a fake fireplace.
"Don't use that computer." Michael said. "It sometimes shuts off when you're in the middle of something. But these three work good."
"So, how are you such an expert? Karlie asked.
"I'm a regular here. I can't afford my own computer, so I come down here all the time. I have leukemia. So, I'm here quite a bit for treatment. Michael said.
A sad look came over Karlie's face, as she listened to the words that just left his mouth.
"Don't be sad for me Karlie. I've had it since I was five. The doctors didn't expect me to live to ten. But I'm twelve now and I'm still here. Come on, let's go on the Vogue site."
Karlie was amazed at this young man who was so strong at such a young age. He was so upbeat and positive and yet, he was battling for his life on a daily basis.
As they sat together, she looked over at his mom and said, "I was told that you donated blood for me. Thank you."
"WHAT???" Michael said as he looked at his mom. "You didn't tell me that mom. YOU'RE BLOOD FLOWS THROUGH KARLIE'S VEINS?? What is life right now!!! Oh my God, does this make us siblings in some weird kind of way?"
Karen began to laugh as she said, "I'm pretty sure it doesn't Michael."
"Although.....I don't have a brother and I always wanted one, so, I think that it may make us like step brother and sister." Karlie said as she winked at Karen who smiled back at her.
"OMG." Michael said. "Can I call you sis?"
"Sure, why not."
The two of them went onto Vogue's website as they looked at the fall/winter fashion line.
"Isn't that beautiful?" Michael said. "I love fall because of all the warm colors. If I ever become a designer, I'm going to have an amazing fall line. Would you walk in my show?"
"I would love to." Karlie said.
Taylor had returned and made her way to the computer room, as she walked over to Karlie giving her a kiss. "Hi Michael. Are you keeping Karlie occupied?"
"Yeah. We're checking out the fall/winter fashion line. Karlie said she'd walk in my show, if I became a designer. How cool is that?"
"That is pretty cool." Taylor said.
"Michael, we need to get back to your room. You can't overdue it." Karen said.
"But mooooom, how often will I get to review the latest fashion trends with Karlie Kloss? Can't I just stay for a little while longer?"
Karlie nudged his arm and said, "Tell ya what. Why don't you go get some rest and I'll come down to see you in a little bit? I have to walk around for exercise, so I'll stop by your room."
