"I'm so sorry, I didn't see you there," I say gathering my books off the ground.
"No it's not your fault," she says guiltily as we both stand up. And like nice, normal people we smile at each other, say we need to get to class and depart.
Can't believe that happened. And that I acted like a completely normal person through it all. All of algebra I ponder on this. I just talked to the prettiest, most popular girl in school and didn't stutter. I'm so freaking proud of myself. Never ever would the old me have been able to do what I just did. But then the old me would also be obsessing like this. I immediately turn off that part of my brain and try to focus on what Mrs. Mathews is saying up front. But who really wants to know what x means anyway? So I let my attention drift and I notice that there is, in fact, one other person in the room who looks very, very close to sleep. Percy Jackson. His leg keeps bouncing up and down though, it must help him stay awake or something.
I rip out a piece of paper from my notebook and write: Solve this equation: Mrs. Mathews + Algebra =
I slip the note to him. He reads it, taking a lot longer than he probably has too before smirking and writing something down.
He passes the note back to me completed. After the equation he's written: te end of te wold. I take a moment to read it and realize he must mean "the end of the world". Dang he's got to work on his spelling.
I write this on the sheet: A+! You've done your homework young man! Congratulations!😃. I pass it back to him. He smirks again. And I can see he's trying not to burst out laughing. I catch his gaze out of the corner of my eye big grins on both our faces. Just as quickly we look away, knowing we'll bust out laughing and have to serve it up in detention.
We fall silent and instead go back to struggling to stay awake. Finally, 10 minutes later, the bell rings. I literally sprint out of the room. In the hall someone taps me on the shoulder. I turn around. It's Percy Jackson. In his hand is the note I gave him. "Thanks for the note," he says. "I'm Percy by the way."
"Autumn," I reply and shake his hand. In my head my brain's doing summersaults. Did my voice seriously come out that nicely? Not a single squeak or crack? OMG. I'm so pro at this!
Again, like with Annabeth, we awkwardly nod and part in different directions. Me gloating like a mad woman.
*******Lunch Time*******
I trudge over to the table where Ty, Sky and I always sit, carrying my sloppy mess of a lunch. They wave at me. I smile, then quickly deposit my tray on the table and take my seat.
"How's life?"
"Going good."
I feel a tap on my shoulder. I look at my friends for any indication of who it is. Both their eyes are wide. So, someone popular probably who none of thought knew we existed. I plaster a fake smile on and turn in my seat. "Can we help y-"
Oh. My. God. Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase are behind me.
"Hey, Autumn. I was wondering if you could spare some room at your table?" Percy asks hopefully.
"Uh, yeah. Sure. Course." Now I definitely wasn't as pleased with my performance as before. But still, lot better than I would of handled it had it been last week.
He grins. "Cool." Then, turning to Sky and Ty, he says, "sorry don't think we've been introduced. I'm Percy Jackson." He holds out his hand. Ty stares confusedly at it. Shake it! I want to scream. Luckily Sky still has the majority of her senses and says, "Hey, I'm Sky and this is Ty." She then grasps his hand. I mouth a quick Thank You to her.
Percy smiles and the two of them sit down. I notice how quickly his arm snakes around her waist and how she leans against his chest ever so slightly. He looks down at her ever so slightly and even in that one glance I can tell how much in love they are and that they'll be together forever. I smile into my sloppy lunch. Then I grimace as I take a closer look at it.
"Ew, what even is this stuff?" I ask.
"No clue whatsoever," says Percy angling his head so he can see the mystery meal from all sides. Annabeth leans over and whispers something in his ear. He blushes and sits up straighter. Annabeth gives him a peck on the cheek. They are soooo cute together. I'm literally melting.
That's when Candy stalks over. Now, contradictory to her name, Candy is not sweet or nice in anyway. She's the queen of the sluts at school and not afraid to show it. Her air is confident as she purrs up behind Percy and cradles his neck, giving him a message.
He and Annabeth both leap up. Each of them giving their own personal death stare. I swear any moment now daggers are going to come shooting out of Annabeth's eyes. "Get away from me," Percy shouts. The whole of the cafeteria is now tuning in to see what's happening with their OTP.
Candy looks taken aback. I wonder why since this is like the millionth time she's tried to break them up this year. Then she recovers and grins before walking up to him. She's probably thinking of kissing him. Annabeth cuts the thought short by punching her in the face. Candy stumbles back into a table. By now the whole cafeteria is laughing. I smirk and mentally give myself a reminder telling me not to get on Annabeth's bad side. She seemed so nice in the hall and during the introductions, but she can pack a punch. If I'd ever felt even the slightest thing for Percy it had all vanished.
Candy stalks out of the cafeteria and Percy pulls Annabeth up in a hug and kisses her. When they break apart, they're both breathing heavily and red in the face. The cafeteria fills with whoops and mainly a lot of people shouting "Percabeth for the win!"
I quickly join in. They are so perfect together.
OMG I'm so excited. I love writing this (even if there's like 2 people reading it - thanks so much). I'll try to update soon for those couple people. Chow for now.
