That asshole, I think as I lean over the staircase railing and look around for Stefan. He stood Elena up.Well, technically he stood me up, but I'm pretending to be Elena, so he really stood her up.
"Ms. Elena Gilbert," the guy at the bottom of the stairs annouces as I walk to the stairs. "Escorted by Mr. Stefan Salvatore."
I take a deep breath and reluctantly grab the railing as everyone applauds.
He better be down there. He better be down there.
I fake a smile as I descend the stairs, but really I'm thinking about how much I'm going to hate Stefan if he's not waiting for me down there.
As I walk down the stairs, I'm disappointed to see only one escort standing there waiting and I'm even more disappointed to see that it's not Stefan.
But my disappointment fades as another familar face walks over and takes Stefan's place.
A small smile spreads across my face at the sight of Damon standing at the bottom of the staircase.
I knew there was a reason he was my favorite Salvatore.
"Where's Stefan?" I whisper as I walk over to him.
"I don't know," he whispers back as he takes my hand. "Where's Elena?"
I try hide how surprised I am at the fact that Damon knows it's me and not Elena as I quietly reply, "She's a bit emotional right now."
He gives a slight nod as we walk out into the backyard. He lets go of my hand and we stand in our desginated spots as the music starts.
We both step forward and bow on cue. "What are we going to do?" I ask quickly.
"Right now we just have to get through this," he replies before we both step back.
He's right, I think as I exhale. We just have to get through this and worry later.
We both step forward again, Damon holding up his right hand while I hold up my left as we begin the dance.
Thank God Caroline forced me to practice this dance with her five times yesterday.
Damon makes eye contact with me, a slight smirk playing at his lips, as we circle around each other.
I've never realized how blue his eyes are. And how...intense they are.
We move backward again before stepping forward and grabbing each other's hands.
I place my other hand on Damon's shoulder while Damon rests his other hand on my upper back. I smile at him and he smiles back as we glide around the floor.
In this moment, it feels like it's just the two of us, no one else is there and no one can disturb us. We don't have to worry about our siblings, vampires, or witches: it's just me and Damon.
And as quickly as the moment came, it ends just as fast. The music starts to fade out as Damon and I separate from each other, but our eyes never leave each other.

"Hey, there you are," I say to Elena as walk over to her.
I told her to hide in one of the corriders where no one would see her until after the dance in case she saw Stefan or something.
"Hey," she greets with a smile and a hug. "Thank you for doing this for me. You were great out there."
"Of course. Anything for you," I smile back.
