"Have you guys seen Matt?" Caroline asks as she slams down her lunch tray and sits at our table.

"No, but if he has any common sense, he's probably hiding from you," I retort with a sweet smile before taking a bite of my sandwich.

Caroline has been on a rampage all morning while helping student council decorate the school for Christmas. I tried to avoid her, but she roped me into helping them during my free period. That meant that I couldn't sit with Adam in the library, but on the bright side I got excused from trig, which is really boring without Stefan.

Caroline glares at me as Elena elbows me, but I can tell she's holding back a smile.

"I didn't even know he had this lunch period," Elena says.

"He doesn't," Caroline sighs as she stabs her salad in frustration. "But some days he has free and today is one of those days and I can't find him."

"Maybe he's busy," I suggest as I search through my bag for my phone, which I can't seem to find. "Do you guys know where my phone is?"

"Maybe it's busy," Caroline mocks me and I narrow my eyes at her.

"Fine. You can sit here with Elena and be bitter and petty while I go find my phone," I snap as I grab my bag and stand up.

Despite the short time that I've known her, I love Caroline to death and I would do anything for that girl, but this morning she is really getting on my last nerve and I'm not going to put up with her anymore. I'll talk to her when I don't have an urge to rip her head off of her body.

"Hey, do you want a ride home?" Caroline calls after me, probably feeling bad about what she said.

"Not from you," I call back as I walk out the cafeteria.

I think the last place I had my phone was near the library when I was texting Damon about how miserable I was helping Caroline decorate and he said that's how he felt yesterday with me.

I don't see my phone anywhere outside the library, so I go inside to look for it.

I quietly walk up and down the aisles, trying not to disturb anyone, when I hear someone groan in frustration. "Why can't I understand this?"

I peek through a bookshelf to see Matt sitting by himself at table, his head in his hands.

Found him, I think as I walk over to him and take a seat in the chair next to him, making him raise his head.

"Gabby," he says when he sees me. "What are you doing here?"

"I lost my phone and I thought it might be in here," I answer, not looking at him as I drag his books in front of me to see what he's working on. "I see that you're here...working on trig?"

"More like trying to do trig," he grumbles, slamming his pencil on the table.

"Are you passing the class?" I ask as I look over his work, grabbing his pencil and correcting his mistakes.

"Is a 60 passing?" he asks with a dry laugh, rubbing his face again.

"Uh, no. You're barely passing, Matt," I tell him. "Do you have a tutor?"

"What would it look like if the quarterback of the football team needed a tutor in math?"

"It would look like you're struggling in a class and you need help," I scoff, looking him in the eyes. "If you don't bring your grade up, Coach is going to put you on academic probabtion."

"You don't think I know that?" Matt retorts, his voice raising slightly and I raise an eyebrow at him, making him sigh. "Sorry, I didn't mean to yell."
