***Ben’s POV***

“Man, what’s wrong?” Chris asked as we walked to first period. I shook myself. “Nothing,” I lied smoothly. He raised an eyebrow. “Dude, you have them look in your eyes. The one you get when you’re trying to hide something.”

Dammit. I was regretting cutting my hair so short at the moment. Otherwise I would’ve flipped it in my face to hide the guilt in my eyes. It was a trick I had picked up from my best friend.

Speaking of my best friend, he was walking towards us. Damn, damn, damn! He would be able to immediately know something was wrong.

I grabbed Chris and began to drag him the opposite way. I could see the hurt look on my best friend’s face and I stopped. Dammit. I couldn’t hurt him. Not like this.

Chris was giving me a confused look. “Come on Hanley! I have to get to my locker!” I called to him, making up a lie. He relaxed and hurried over to us.

We walked to my locker and I opened it and randomly tossed a notebook in before closing it and walking again. I shoved my hands into the pockets of my black skinny jeans. “What’s wrong?” Hanley asked curiously. I shrugged. “Nothing,” I lied. He already knew I had had sex with Ali.

“Ben, you’re a bad liar,” he accused. “Well I’m not lying!” I said angrily. He gave me a doubtful look but left it alone. For the moment.

We went to first period where I found myself unable to focus. What was my mom going to say if she found out? She would kick me out of the house for sure. What would happen to my baby sister then? I cared for her. I had raised her.

“Benjamin Jarvis!”

I glared up at my teacher. “Kindly tell me the answer to number 3,” she said, giving me a glare. God I hated her. And she hated me. I looked at number 3. We were in geometry at the moment. I quickly calculated in my head.

“The answer is 136 degrees which would make angle B 44 degrees because it’s on a straight line. So the answer is true, the proof checks out thanks to AAS.”

She gave me a shocked look and I lazily raised an eyebrow. “Something wrong?” I asked in annoyance. She just glared at turned away.

Bitch.

I got lost in my thoughts again. Maybe it had been a false alarm. Yea, yea! That was it! Ali was having a false alarm. That was all. It would be alright. I would get to stay with my sister.

The bell rang and I angrily got up and stormed out of class, ignoring Hanley and Chris. I shoved the door opened and left school. I was too distracted to stay any longer. Plus I had next period with Pez, Ali’s brother. If Pez knew she was pregnant by me, he would kick my ass.

I walked home and threw open my front door. I just wasn’t in the mood right now. Mom was watching TV from the couch with a bottle of something next to her. “Eh? Aren’t you supposed to be in school?” she asked, confused. I shrugged. “I left.” “Why?” “Didn’t feel good.” I looked around hopefully. “Got a drink?” She nodded and pointed at the kitchen.

I walked in and grabbed up the first bottle I saw. I popped it and began to drink.

I walked back out to my mom. “Smoke?” I asked. She tossed her pack of cigarettes and her lighter at me. I thanked her and went up to my room.

I lit the cigarette and laid down on my bed. My sister wouldn’t be home from school for awhile so I had time to myself. My mind wandered back over to Ali and I angrily punched my wall.

“If you punch a hole in that wall again I will shoot you!”

Mom’s voice made me roll my eyes and I sat up. I would go to the mall and maybe pick up a new wristband.

I was going to need it.

“Where are you going?” mom asked as I went downstairs. “Mall,” I said. “I thought you didn’t feel good?” “I’ll be back by 3.”

I left the house and made my way to the mall.

***Ali’s POV***

Jersey, Dekka, and I sat down at the food court with some pizza. “Ali, Ali, Ali show!” Jersey sang cheerfully. I giggled. He took a big bite of pizza and smiled at me. I rolled my eyes.

“Um…uh oh,” Dekka said nervously. “Um…why uh oh?” I asked. She nodded. I turned and my faced dropped.

Ben!

He was carrying a Hot Topic bag and walking towards Spencer’s. He turned and caught my eye. His face paled a little. Maybe Pez was right…

“Ben!” Dekka yelled, waving him over. He bit his lip and nervously made his way over. “Watch this,” she whispered.

He sat down with us and she smiled brightly. “What did you buy Ben?” He opened the bag and showed us a checkered wristband. “Oh, cool!” He nodded. “Why so nervous she asked?” He shrugged. “I’m not,” he said, clearly lying. Wow he was a bad liar.

Jersey laughed bitterly. “Jarvis, you suck at lying.” Ben glared. “Fuck off Jersey. I’m not in the mood.” “Aw, Benji what’s wrong?” Dekka asked with a frown. He didn’t even look at me. “I’m just…tired. My sister kept me up all night. She had a nightmare.”

I looked at him in surprise. “You have a sister?” He nodded. “Yea. She’s 6.” Huh. I didn’t know that. Not that I should. Because knowing Ben’s life wasn’t a priority to me.

At least, not yet.

Jersey was shooting death stares at Ben. God I hoped he could control himself. “So who are you dating Ben?” Dekka asked curiously. I knew she was just trying to make him squirm. It was working.

He nervously flicked his eyes to the Hot Topic bag. “No one,” he said carefully. “Oh, well, who do you have your eyes on?” He shrugged. “No one.” He was so adorable. The way he put his chain in his mouth and began to chew on it. “Look, I have to go,” he said hurriedly and got up.

Jersey looked like he want to kill him. Ben quickly glided away from us. “Ugh, he disgusts me,” Jersey said angrily. I sighed. “Be nice Jersey, he’s the father of my child.”

The absent father, apparently.
