Ali started laughing. “Oh, sorry Mrs. Jarvis. I’m not really pregnant.” She laughed again, as if the idea were amusing. She pulled up her shirt to reveal her super skinny form. “See?”
Mom cast uncertain eyes at us. I rolled my eyes. “Please mom. I’ve never even had sex before,” I lied smoothly. Mom just glared at us before slowly leaving.
I let out a relieved breath. “Maybe you should leave,” I said. I had a feeling mom was going to come back drunk and pissed off. Ali nodded slowly. “Sorry Ben,” she whispered. I shrugged. “It’s alright.”
I watched her leave.
***Ali’s POV***
The next day at school, my eyes scanned the halls until they landed on Ben. Oh my god! “Ben!” I cried as he neared me to get to Chris. His eye was swollen shut, he was limping badly, arm sagged pathetically.
“She did this to you didn’t she?” I whispered, tears springing to my eyes. This was all my stupid fault! He shook his head. “No. I got in a fight.” I didn’t believe him. His mom had done this to him.
All because she had overheard me.
“Hey Ben. Come on,” Chris said, coming up to us. Chris noticed Ben’s sagging arm and pulled his fist back. He punched it and it made a disgusting pop. Ben winced but hi arm no longer sagged.
He limped after Chris as Jersey came up to me. He let out a whistle. “Man he looks bad.” I nodded. “Yea,” I said quietly. Jersey slung an arm around me. “Aw Ali. What’s wrong?” he asked in concern. I shook my head. “Nothing,” I lied.
Jersey gave me a doubtful look but didn’t question me further as we walked to our lockers. “So, um, what are you going to do about your parents?” he asked softly.
I shrugged. “It won’t be noticeable for about 2 or 3 months. So I can figure out what to do then. He nodded.
I doubted my parents would kick me out of the house. They were understanding people and they deeply loved Pez and I.
But what about Ben?
If his mom beat him like that, I couldn’t let her find out he had gotten me pregnant. She had hurt him bad enough just suspecting it. Why did he put up with being hit like that? Why didn’t he tell someone? Did she beat his sister too?
I sighed. “Jersey, want to go to Taco Bell?” I offered and he rolled his eyes and laughed. “Sure.” He and I ditched school and drove off to Taco Bell together.
We ordered and sat down with our food. “What’s bugging you?” he asked gently. I sighed. “Promise you won’t tell?” He held out his pinky and I took it with a laugh.
I went serious again as I released his pinky. “Ben’s mom beats him. I’m scared of what will happen if she finds out he got me pregnant.” His eyes widened. “Oh Ali,” he whispered and gave me a hug.
He leaned back in his seat with a sigh. “Yea, I remember him always coming into school beat up. He always said he’d gotten into a fight though.” I nodded. “That’s what he tried to tell me too. But I was at his house yesterday. I think she’s a drunk.”
Jersey took a thoughtful bite of his taco. “That would explain a lot about him. Why he’s always so beat up.” “Obviously,” I grumbled as I sipped my soda. He rolled his eyes at me.
“Isn’t Pez going to wonder where you are?” I shrugged. “He’ll text me if he wants to know where I am.” I really hoped Pez wouldn’t beat Ben up. He didn’t deserve it. It was my decision to have sex with him.
I really hoped everything would work out. Because now I couldn’t blame Ben if he didn’t want to help me. If he was too scared for his own safety. How could I possibly blame him?
Poor Ben. I didn’t know what kind of situation he came from. I hated myself for saying what I said at his house. It was my fault his mom had overheard.
I gloomily ate my taco as Jersey watched with sympathetic eyes. “Hey, we can go back to my house and play Just Dance,” he said, cracking a smile. I laughed and got up to follow up.
We drove back to his house and started to play the game. My mind got off Ben and the pregnancy issue for a little as I laughed and danced along with Jersey.
“Vic? You home?” his mom called as she entered the house. “Yea mom!” he yelled. She entered the living room where we were. “Hi Ali,” she said. I smiled and gave a polite wave.
She gave Jersey a stern look. “I don’t like you skipping school Vic,” she said. He shrugged. “Sorry. We didn’t want to stay. Too annoyed.” She sat down and watched us dance.
“Why?” Jersey’s mom was always trying to stay up to date about what was going on in his life. I tried not to laugh. It annoyed poor Jersey so much. “Benjamin fucking Jarvis,” he grumbled.
His mom looked puzzled for a second. “He’s the one with the gaps in his teeth right?” I giggled. Jersey nodded. “Yea. He was over our house a little while ago.” “Oh. I didn’t like him. He smelled like smoke.” Jersey rolled his eyes. “His mom smokes. She dropped him off.” “Oh. Never mind then. He was polite. I liked him.”
Jersey shook his head and changed the song. “Whatever mom,” he grumbled. “Speaking of moms, I better get home,” I said. I waved at them and left to walk home.
How was my mom going to react to the pregnancy?
Well, I knew one thing for sure.
My family was going to murder Benjamin Jarvis.
