“I gave you blood, blood, blood. I gave you gallons of the stuff. I gave you all that you could drink and it has never been enough.”
My iPod exploded in my ears as I walked into school. My eyes scanned for any of my friends as I got in the hall.
Chris was leaning against the wall with a book. I walked over to him and he looked up and pulled a headphone out to talk. “Pez was looking for you,” he said. Oh shit. “Why?” I asked casually. He shrugged. “Didn’t say. Just wanted to know where you were. I told him you weren’t here yet.”
He looked around and nodded. “There he is.” Pez was scanning the halls with a pissed look on his face. “Shit,” I mumbled and turned to hurry away.
I felt a hand on my shoulder. I was spun around and then Pez grabbed me by the front of my shirt and slammed me against the wall. “You,” he growled angrily.
“Dude, the fuck?” Chris said, watching in surprise. Pez held up a fist. “She was crying last night,” he hissed. “Because of you. I don’t like it when she cries.”
I tried and failed to pry his hands off my shirt. “Calm down Pez!” Chris cried. Pez punched me and got one of my bruises from mom. I winced. Pez started to hit me more. Just like with mom, I went emotionless. It was a natural reaction for me. I didn’t defend myself. I didn’t fight back. I just went emotionless.
Chris shoved Pez off of me. “Man are you fucking crazy?!” he cried. “Get off me!” Pez yelled and pushed Chris away. He glared at me. “You better help her you sorry fuck. If you don’t than I swear to god I’ll break your sorry face.”
He turned and stormed off. “You alright?” I nodded at Chris as I mentally shook myself. “Why is he so pissed at you? What did you do?” “One night stand with his sister.”
Chris’s eyes widened. “Ben, you’re an idiot!” he said, shaking his head. I rolled my eyes and shrugged. “It happens.”
I watched Ali walk in and go to stand with Dekka and Jersey. “I’ll be right back. I have to talk to her before he kills me,” I said and walked on over to her.
“Ali?” She turned to look at me and gave me a sheepish smile. “Hi Ben. What’s up?” “I need to talk to you. In private.”
She curiously followed me away from everyone else. “What?” I sighed. “Look, do you want to hang out at my place after school?” She looked hopeful. “Sure!”
So after school, she got on the bus with me.
We got off at my place and I nervously led her inside. Mom was laying on the couch smoking and watching TV. “Who are you?” she snarled at Ali, obviously drunk. “Mom, this is Ali. Ali, this is my mom.” Ali smiled politely. “Hello ma’am.” Mom just grumbled and turned back to the TV.
I was kind of nervous. I didn’t like people knowing my mom beat me. But mom had no problem beating me in front of my friends. She had done it before. My 12th birthday, I had had friends over. I had accidentally spilled soda on the carpet and she had beat the shit out of me in front of everyone. Luckily everyone translated to Hanley, Chris, and my friends Jay and Johnny. Still. Embarrassing.
I brought Ali into the kitchen and tossed a soda at her. “Your mom seems…um…” I laughed softly. “Bitchy? Just a little.” We sat down at the table and ate chips together in an awkward silence.
Jeydyn’s bus pulled up to the house and I jumped up. “Go upstairs. Right to the top of the stairs and wait alright?” She nodded in confusion and got up. I hurried outside and over to Jeydyn’s bus. The driver smiled at me and I waved.
Jeydyn smiled and grabbed my hand. I helped her off the bus and picked her up to carry her inside. “My friend is here,” I said and kissed her forehead. “Yay!” she said and giggled. “You’re in a good mood. Why?” I asked. “I got a 100 on my vocabulary test!” I smiled. “That’s awesome Jeydyn!” She smiled proudly.
I carried her inside, past mom, and up the stairs. Ali was waiting and a small smile lit her face when she saw me carrying Jeydyn. Jeydyn blushed and shyly dug her head into my chest.
“Hey! No fair,” I said to her. Jeydyn giggled. I rolled my eyes. “Come on,” I said to Ali and led her into my room. I plopped Jeydyn down on my bed and took her jacket and shoes off her.
“Ali, this is my baby sister Jeydyn. Jeydyn, this is Ali.” “Hi Jeydyn,” ALi said gently, smiling. Jeydyn looked up and blushed. “Hi,” she said quietly. “She’s shy apparently. It happened over night,” I said and rolled my eyes again.
Ali was still smiling. “You’re adorable Jeydyn!” she said. Jeydyn smiled lightly. She dug around her backpack and handed me her vocabulary test, a proud smile back on her face.
“Oh no! My show is on!” she said and hurried out of my room to go watch TV. I laughed. Only my sister.
“She’s so cute, Ben,” Ali said. I nodded. “Yea. She is.” I smiled and put the test on my bed. Ali was watching me. “So…what are we going to do about…you know.” She placed her hands on her stomach.
I sighed and she came and we sat on my bed together. “I don’t know Ali,” I admitted. “Ben, I’m pregnant with your child. You can’t just abandon me,” she said desperately.
“WHAT?!”
Oh shit.
Mom was standing in the doorway.
