“Alright, time to get down to business,” my dad said, standing up once everyone was done eating. He picked Jeydyn up and left the room, probably to bring her up to her room. Mrs. Zandi cleared her throat. “Pez, why don’t you follow Mr. Jarvis? Maybe you can keep an eye on Jeydyn.”
He glared but went off after my dad. A few minutes later, dad came back and led us to the living room where we all sat down.
Ali sighed and sat next to me. Grandma patted my knee and gave me a reassuring smile. “Ben, if I may just talk to you for a minute in private?” she asked. I nodded and followed her back into the kitchen.
She hugged me tightly. “You can fall in love over and over again Benjamin, but you’re only in love once. I can see it in your eyes. This is the girl. Don’t let her go. Don’t let problems drive you apart. Let them bring you closer together. Work them out. Become stronger together.” She kissed my forehead and I smiled at her softly. “Thanks grandma,” I whispered.
My grandpa had passed away when I was only 7 years old. I knew my grandma had taken it hard, but she had held tough. She was the strongest person I knew.
We went back into the living room and I sat next to Ali again. I mentally sighed and wrapped my arms around her. She tensed in surprise but relaxed and rested her head on my shoulder. “I’m so sorry Ben. I should’ve listened to you,” she whispered.
“No, I’m sorry I’m such a bastard. I’ll work on my temper. I promise,” I whispered back and kissed her cheek. She smiled and sighed in content.
“I would be more than happy to watch the babies while the kids are at school. I don’t want either one of them to drop out,” grandma said. The adults nodded. “What are you kids going to do money-wise? We can’t support you forever,” Mr. Zandi said, glaring at me.
I forced myself not to snap at him. I didn’t like the way he looked at me. “Well, I’m working at Hot Topic now.” I mentally cursed myself. My tone had been annoyed and full of hate at him.
He remained silent but continued to glare. “Well, Ali’s due in, what, 2 months? We need to have a plan for when she goes into labor,” dad said. I nodded and held Ali tighter, sensing her fear.
She placed her hands on her stomach. I placed my hand over both of hers and she gave me a small smile. I could feel one of the twins kick and tried to hide my smile.
“Of course. School is almost out so I don’t think we’ll have to worry too much about her going into labor in school. She’ll be almost 9 months when school gets out,” Mrs. Zandi said.
I could feel Ali starting to shake now. I felt myself starting to get scared too. This was suddenly our reality. We were going to be parents. We were really going to be parents.
The reality smashed me hard. I was going to be responsible for not one, but two lives. Two innocent lives that I could very easily screw up if I wasn’t careful. I wanted to walk away. To go get drunk and forget all of this.
But I knew that all had to end.
I had to just except the fact that I had screwed up and now I had to take responsibility. Drinking and smoking were not going to fix this. I had to give it all up. I had to get help from my dad with all of my addictions. I had to stop fighting with Ali. We had to learn to work things out and talk.
We talked for about another hour before dad invited the adults in for drinks. Ali and I went up to my room. I could hear Pez playing with Jeydyn in her room and couldn’t help but laugh.
Ali and I laid down on my bed and I pulled her into my arms and kissed her gently. “I’m so sorry Ali. I’m going to quit the addictions. I promise,” I whispered. She smiled and kissed me deeply. “Thank you Benjamin. Thank you so much.”
I brought my lips to hers again. “We should think about names,” she said when we had finished kissing. I nodded. “Like…what? Twin boys.” I thought hard. I didn’t have any name preferences. I certainly didn’t want a Benjamin Robert Jarvis Jr.
Poor BJ junior.
BJ the second.
How embarrassing.
I grabbed my iPod and put it in my speakers. Music always helped me think. I turned it on and smiled when Seduction played. Oh the sweet, sweet irony.
Sunlight warms my face only in dreams of you
I know you'll wait for me... it's been too long
Beautiful eyes. beautiful lies to dull the pain
Beautiful eyes, beautiful lies... you're killing me
I would wait for years just to feel you again
I will die without you... would you my love?
Beautiful eyes, beautiful lies pour from your mouth as
You scream his name... you're killing me
Cries escape your sweet voice as I kiss you one last time
... One last time...
Do you remember me and our beautiful affair?
Look in my eyes and honestly tell me our love is gone!
Why have you turned your back on me?
One day you'll wake up and realize your mistake
Ice runs through my veins as I stand face to face with
The one who stole it all
Compassion is not an option
Cries escape your sweet voice as I kiss you one last time
... One last time...
Do you remember me and our beautiful affair?
Look in my eyes and honestly tell me our love is gone!
Why have you turned your back on me?
One day you'll wake up
Realize your mistake!
In love we're one, inseparable, pathetic lust, thus we crumble
I saw your eyes, I wiped your tears, I waited for you...
Who do you see with your eyes shut tight?
Regret will be your bride
Goodbye...
Do you remember me and our beautiful affair?
Look in my eyes and honestly tell me our love is gone!
Why have you turned your back on me?
One day you'll wake and realize your mistake
Cries escape your sweet voice as I paint my own goodbyeAli smiled. “I love how Shane Crump actually gets to sing in this one.” I nodded. “Yea, he’s alright,” I said with a shrug. She rolled her eyes. “Shawn has such a pretty voice. His and Shane’s go good together.”
Her eyes widened in excitement and I looked at her curiously. “Shawn Milke and Shane Crump!” she cried. “What about them?” I asked in confusion. She placed her hands on her stomach and smiled at me. Realization hit me and I laughed. “Shawn and Shane? I like it,” I said truthfully.
I looked up and saw my grandma smiling from the doorway. “I’m going to be living with you from now on Ben,” she said with a wink. I smiled. “Alright!” She chuckled. “And I can make you breakfast every morning!” I laughed. My grandma made the best breakfasts. I kissed Ali and grandma smiled even wider at me. “I’ll leave you two alone for now,” she said and gently shut my door. “She’s so nice,” Ali said with a smile. I nodded. “Yea, she is.” Ali buried her face in my chest and I held her close.
Content for the moment, we allowed ourselves to drift off to sleep.
