***3 Years Later***

“Daddy!” two little voices cried at the same time as I chased them. Shane and Shawn latched onto Ben’s leg and he stumbled back a little before smiling. I caught up to them and smiled. “We were playing tag,” I explained.

Ben chuckled and leaned down. He picked Shawn up and kissed his forehead. Shane came over to me and I picked him up. We could hear a school bus in the distance.

I watched through the window and Ben went outside. Jeydyn’s bus pulled up and the door opened. The driver eyed Ben and Shawn with disapproval. Ben grabbed Jeydyn’s hand and helped her off the bus.

Hand in hand, they walked inside. Jeydyn had never forgiven me for taking her brother’s attention away from her. I knew she’d understand when she was older though.

“How was your day Jeydyn?” Ben asked casually as they entered the house. “It was good,” she said quietly. She was an incredibly quiet kid. She glanced over at me. “Hi Shane,” she said, ignoring me completely.

Shane waved and giggled. I kissed his cheek and smiled at him. Ben and I had learned to talk out our problems. Ben was still working terribly hard. The plus side was that he had managed to keep his grades up, save up a lot of money, and get a good relationship with the twins. The bad thing?

His temper was frightening.

It was worse than ever thanks to all the stress he faced. To be the victim of Ben’s temper was a terrifying nightmarish experience. I was surprised he hadn’t exploded at the twins yet. I watched as he fought hard not to lash out at Jeydyn when she tried to get his attention.

Ben’s father hated me with a passion. JJ blamed this entire thing on me. And, like I’d said all along, it wasn’t Ben’s fault, but it wasn’t completely mine either. He had used me and I had let him. It was both our faults.

I set Shane down and Ben set Shawn done. “Daddy, come outside with us,” Shawn said and grabbed Ben’s pant leg. Ben smiled softly and began to follow them.

“Ben!” He turned to face Jeydyn. “Yea Jeydyn?” he asked curiously. “Can I play outside with you too?” she asked hopefully. He shook his head. “No. Go do your homework Jeydyn.” She frowned. “Can I play with you when I’m done with my homework?”

Ben shook his head again. “No. I have to go to work at the restaurant in an hour. Maybe another time.” Maybe another time. He said that to her almost every day and he still hadn’t played with her. He turned around and followed the boys outside.

I watched the crushed look in Jeydyn’s eyes explode. “I’ll play with you Jeydyn,” I said softly. She glared at me. “I don’t like you,” she said, dropping her gaze to floor and wiping at her eyes. I sighed sadly. She was too young to understand right now.

“I want my big brother back!” she cried and ran upstairs. I went and sat down on the couch by myself. Ben’s grandma was out at the grocery store. I could hear JJ coming downstairs.

“Oh hell no! Get off your lazy ass and do something useful Ali!” he snapped when he saw me. “JJ, I already cleaned the boys’ room and washed all the clothes,” I said desperately. He shook his head. “I don’t care. Go get a job. Support your family. You two won’t make it with Ben’s salary.”

“The kids are only 3! I can’t leave them,” I said angrily. “School’s out. You both graduated. Go work at McDonalds. My mother can watch the twins.” I shot up. “Why do you hate me so much?” I demanded.

He glared. “I don’t hate you. I hate the fact that you expect my son to do everything. He makes the money, he plays with the boys, and he takes care of them. Cleaning their room and washing their clothes? Not gonna cut it.”

I clenched my fists. “And what the hell did you ever do for Ben when he was a kid?!” He glared harder. “I raised him. His mother didn’t do anything for him! I took care of him, I fed him, I made the money, I played with him, I taught him, I kept an eye on him, and I cleaned his clothes and his room. It stressed me out and I was an adult. He’s a kid trying to do all of that for 2 kids.”

I glared at him, sick of the way he talked to me. “No. He does that for 3 kids. Remember Jeydyn? The innocent little girl you left him to raise? You know, when you walked out on him for 5 years and completely screwed him up mentally and emotionally?”

The pain on JJ’s face was nearly impossible to look at. It was clear anguish and regret. It stabbed me in my heart with guilt.

“I’m sorry JJ,” I whispered. “I just want those kids to have a good life. And I want my son to have the best life he can,” he said quietly, tears rising slowly in his eyes. “And now he has no time for Jeydyn. It’s a mess that’s hurting everyone.”

Ben walked in with the twins. “Grandpa,” they cried and ran over to JJ. He smiled at them sadly and grabbed their hands. “I’ll make them lunch,” he said and led them into the kitchen. I turned to Ben and sighed sadly.

“What? What’s wrong?” he asked, sounding annoyed. “Ben, I’m sorry. I know I don’t do anything and you do all the work. I know you miss having time with Jeydyn. I’m sorry.” I didn’t know what else to say. Nothing would ever fix this mess.

A sad look entered his eyes. “I’m scared she’ll hurt herself. Or get addicted to the things I did. I don’t want to see her turn into me,” he whispered and wrapped his arms around me. “I love you so much Ali. I love our boys. I love my sister and dad and grandma. Don’t feel guilty and don’t apologize. I want to do these things. Maybe, just maybe, I can feel a little better if I do good.”

We sat down together and I rested my head on his shoulder. He smiled at me lightly, his gaps as adorable as ever. I secretly wished our boys would have the gaps in their teeth that Ben had. There was just something about those gaps that I loved.

“The past haunts me. I did terrible things. I want to make up for them. I want you to relax and stay around the boys. Maybe I can even go to community college or something. My dad would help me pay for it. I could give us a better life then.”

I kissed him deeply. “I love you Benjamin Robert Jarvis,” I breathed. He held me to him lovingly. “I love you Ali. So, so much. Forever.” He kissed me. Our future was unclear. Who knew what was going to happen to us now.

But I was ready to face it with Benjamin and our sons.
