When Kurt woke the next morning, he didn't know where he was at first. Then he buried his face in the pillow under his head and smelled Blaine and the previous night's events rolled back over him. He was warm, enveloped in something soft and cozy. Someone had covered him with a blanket at some point in time during the night.
He opened his eyes, looking around without moving his head. It was early. The light sifting through the gap in the curtains was pale and weak, exactly like Kurt felt. He could see his own bed lay empty. Blaine had not slept in the room last night. The thought made his eyes sting again.
He climbed slowly out of Blaine's bed and made his way into the bathroom. His eyes still burned from crying the night before and his face felt uncomfortable where his tears had dried.
Turning on the shower, he undressed and stood under the hot water until he was shaking so hard from crying that he had to sit down on the tile. He curled up and sobbed into his knees until he'd cried himself dry again. He forced himself to stand and dry himself off and pull on his clean robes.
When he went back into the bedroom, Jeff and Nick were sitting on his bed, waiting for him. They seemed to have guessed what had happened. Thad, Wes, and David had already left. Jeff patted the space between them and Kurt had barely sat down before he burst into tears again.
Jeff allowed him to cry against his shoulder and Nick gripped his hand tightly. He welcomed the pressure, the warmth, when he felt so cold and empty inside because he was terrified of having to make the decision he was faced with.
He lifted his head from Jeff's shoulder and stared down at his lap. "I don't know what to do," he croaked.
Jeff patted his shoulder gently. "Kurt, I know you're having to deal with something right now you never asked for," he said softly. "But you need to understand that Blaine had to tell you how he felt. You know why he keeps everything bottled up, it wasn't fair for him to try and deal with it by himself anymore."
"It may not seem fair that he put this on you," Nick said, "but it's better that you know. He's been through so much. As long as you know he'll always be there for you and you'll always be there for him, even as just a friend, that's all that matters to him."
"And we're here for you, too, Kurt," Jeff said with a small smile.
"Yea, you need some crazy in your life and we're happy to provide it," Nick agreed.
Kurt let out a small sound between a laugh and a hiccup and smiled. "I love you guys," he muttered.
"We know," Nick said, beaming.
"It's because we're brilliant," Jeff added airily.
Kurt sniffed and smiled, wiping his eyes on his robes. The thought of having to go back to class was sheer torture, but they made it a little easier to face.
"Come on," Jeff said, standing and hauling Kurt up with him. "We've got Defense."
Kurt froze. Defense Against the Dark Arts. Both Blaine and Flint would be there. He didn't think he'd be able to face one of them, much less both of them.
"Don't worry, you can sit with us," Nick said, laying a hand on his shoulder. "Blaine will understand."
Kurt gave him a grateful look and accepted his bag from Jeff, who had already packed his things for him.
He walked between them to class, relishing their presence, which seemed to be the only thing keeping him from turning around and running back to hide in the dormitory.
When they entered the classroom, the chatter trailed away, as though the other students seemed to notice the sudden tension. Kurt looked at Blaine, who was sitting with Wes and David, then at Flint, who was sitting with his best friend, Daniel...something, Kurt couldn't remember his last name.
