He stared around the empty room, at the bare walls and seven neatly made beds arranged against them, the morning light streaming through the windows to splash across the strangely silent space.

His trunk was packed beside him, his books and cloths tucked neatly away, though he wished much more that he could carry his memories with him instead, to be able to pull them out when they started to fade and look them over, turn them in his hands to make the time until he could make more a little more bearable.

Moving to the window, he opened it and held out the owl resting on his forearm.

"I'll see you later,Pav," he whispered, smiling as the bird nibbled his finger affectionately before taking off into the bright blue sky, winging amongst the soft clouds before disappearing into them as he caught the gentle updraft.

The door opened behind him.

"Ready to go?"

Kurt turned to see Blaine standing in the doorway, smiling softly and leaning against the frame.

"Yea," Kurt said, looking back out the window for another moment before closing it.

He moved back to his trunk, not looking at Blaine for fear he might start crying.

"Hey," Blaine said, moving towards him. "We'll be back." He pulled Kurt into a tight hug, one arm around his waist, one against his back with his hand stroking his hair.

Kurt buried his face in Blaine's neck, taking in the familiar smell and feeling tears well in his eyes.

"I don't want to leave," he whispered, his arms draped around Blaine's neck. "I don't want to leave you."

"I know," Blaine soothed, holding him a little tighter. "I don't want you to leave either."

They stayed like that for a few minutes. Kurt needed the moment, the comfort Blaine was pouring into him from his hold. He felt a little better after a time and pulled back to meet Blaine's gaze.

Touching their foreheads together, Blaine smiled. "Better?"

Kurt nodded, smiling faintly.

Blaine kissed him gently, sliding one hand down to wind their fingers together and grabbing the handle of Kurt's trunk with the other.

Kurt moved to walk beside him, plucking Pavarotti's empty cage up from the floor. Glancing over at him, Blaine gave his hand a small squeeze as they walked from the room together, Kurt taking one last look over his shoulder at it.

The common room was nearly empty, most students were already waiting in the entrance hall for the carriages to take them to the station.

Thad was standing at the windows, looking out at the mountains and clutching a book in his hand, his trunk at his side. He turned at the sound of them coming down the stairs and smiled, dragging his trunk towards them.

"Why aren't you with Flint?" Kurt said, taking his trunk from Blaine so he could carry his own.

"He's meeting me downstairs," Thad said, smiling.

They walked together down the spiral staircase and down the corridors; each step reminded Kurt that this was the last time he would see that piece of the Castle, that window or statue or tapestry, for two months.

Jeff and Nick were waiting at the bottom of the marble staircase, perched on the banister and laughing about something. Flint was leaning next to them, shaking his head, his face lighting up when he saw Thad, who blushed faintly as they made their way towards them.

Flint kissed Thad on the cheek, taking his trunk from him despite Thad's protests.

"So, Kurtsie," Jeff said, leaping down from the banister to walk next to Kurt across the hall. "Going to miss us?"
