"Jeff, Nick! Stop screwing around! You can talk to Kurt when practice is over!"
Blaine watched as the two Beaters zoomed away from his boyfriend, laughing as they returned to fly above the pitch with the rest of the team.
Kurt was standing at the edge of the grassy field near the changing rooms and leaning against the stands, his arms folded across his chest.
Blaine raised a hand in greeting and saw Kurt return it half-heartedly. In the week since he'd gotten Finn's letter and the picture of his friends—which sat on his bedside table—Kurt had been acting oddly distant, withdrawn and quiet. Blaine understood, of course. He couldn't imagine having to leave everything and moving not only to a new school but a new continent just to feel safe.
He ended practice a little early, much to the delight of his team, who was flying better than he'd ever seen before. Landing lightly at the edge of the pitch with the others, he shouldered his broom and strode to Kurt.
Placing his free hand against the wall beside Kurt's head, he leaned in for a slow kiss, grinning against Kurt's lips when Jeff whistled loudly as he walking past them into the changing room.
"Hey, you," Blaine muttered, kissing Kurt's jaw and nipping it lightly.
"Hi," Kurt said in a clipped tone.
Blaine frowned a little and searched Kurt's blue-grey eyes, which sparkled in the early March sun.
"What's wrong?" he said, setting his broom down and taking both of Kurt's hands in his own. "You've been acting off lately." He paused, rubbing the back of Kurt's hands with his thumbs. "I know you've been missing them.... I'm sorry."
"It's not that," Kurt said stiffly, not meeting his gaze.
"Then what's bothering you?" Blaine said, moving a little closer to him.
Kurt sighed heavily before turning his eyes to him at last. "Are you still in contact with Jeremiah?"
Blaine blinked in surprise.
"W-what? No, of course not," Blaine said, Kurt watching him closely. "Why would you think that?"
Kurt didn't answer immediately, his pointed gaze unreadable and his jaw tight. After a minute or two, he seemed to relax a little and he smiled. "Just...making sure, I guess," he said as he moved his hands to press their palms against each other and weave their fingers together.
Blaine returned his smile, still baffled by his strange question.
He wasn't too concerned, though, as Kurt became decidedly brighter after this, chatting away about the upcoming Hogsmeade weekend visit. They were planning on going with Nick and Jeff to celebrate Kurt's approaching birthday, which was the Monday after the date.
Blaine changed back into his school robes and they walked hand-in-hand back to the Castle, Blaine smiling as Kurt filled the silence happily.
The snow had melted off and pale shoots of green were beginning to spring up across the grounds in greeting of the coming spring. They still wore their cloaks to ward off the lingering chill, but the periwinkle blue sky foretold warm weather for the weekend trip.
As Kurt talked, Blaine ran over his plans for Saturday in his head. He knew they wouldn't be able to skive off class Monday as that was the day they'd be turning in their finished Polyjuice Potions, as well as the essays they'd been preparing for the past month, so he wanted Saturday to be perfect for Kurt.
"Blaine!"
Blaine jumped and turned to Kurt, who was watching him expectantly as they sat at the Ravenclaw table for dinner.
