I took a deep breath and walked into the familiar entrance of Kingston Grammar School, remembering to mind the step that usually tripped me up. Immediately, I was met with bustling students, clutching tightly onto their school books as they made their way to form before the bell rang.
You would expect me to be in earlier than I am because I'm a teacher, but I actually hadn't been in school for the past two weeks due to being ill. I had a viral infection that just wouldn't disappear and I guess it was because it was now winter and I wasn't quite used to having a freezing winter in England.
After minding the students and waving to a few who acknowledged my arrival, I made it to the staff room where majority of the teachers were currently. As soon as I walked in, the pungent scent of coffee filled my nostrils - ah, it was good to be back. I wasn't one hundred percent better, but I honestly couldn't afford to miss any more days off.
"Y/N!"
I finished hanging up my coat and scarf and turned around swiftly, coming face to face with the hazel eyes of my colleague and friend here, Mrs. Hannah Mitchell. She was the only other young member of staff which is the main reason we became friends instantly. She only married last year but thankfully, it didn't change her into an old, unapproachable woman like majority of the staff here.
"Hey, Hannah," I smiled at her, hoping I didn't look as tired as I felt. "How are you?"
As we both walked to the lockers where our things were held, she spoke up with a British accent entwined, "Good. How about you? You've been pretty sick lately. Are you sure you're okay to be back?"
I sighed when I saw the amount of things that were piled in my locker due to my absence. "I'm okay, I guess. But, I can't really miss any more days off or I'll lose this job as fast as I got it." She nodded her head and I looked at her. "Anything I've missed since I've gone?"
She looked up, as if in thought, then settled on, "Not really. Everything you've missed has been emailed to you. But, there is the dance tonight."
I remembered receiving an email about the dance they were holding. They wanted me to chaperone because the boys and girls were being mixed together, (due to this being an all girl's school), along with many other teachers. I had totally forgotten about it and was pretty surprised to know it was today.
"Really? Today?"
She nodded and we both locked our lockers before making our way to the couch. After getting settled there, she pushed a cup of tea my way and I smiled gratefully at her, taking it in hand.
She picked up her own tea and said, "If you don't feel up to it, I can tell the boss man and get you off the hook."
I cracked a smile at her thoughtfulness. "It's okay, Hannah, but thank you. I'm sure I can do it. It's only one night anyway."
She shrugged. "Suit yourself. But, beware because everyone is buzzing about some singer coming in."
I furrowed my eyebrows. "Can the school even afford to have a famous singer here?"
"Apparently so," she replied, sighing to herself. "Yet, when it comes to me getting a raise? Of course they are broke."
I laughed for the first time in a while and shook my head. "Only you, Hannah. Only you."
