»Sophia's POV- Many, many years ago«
"I can't believe this happened!" I yelled through sobs. "I loved him a lot. After... you know who, I didn't wanna let anyone else love me. It wasn't supposed to be serious. Then you told me to just let it happen, because when your heart breaks, it heals ten times stronger. It's not healing!"
"Sophia!" Merel said, shaking me. "It will heal, but not right away."
The rain was pouring on us heavily. I couldn't tell what was from my eyes and what was from the sky. Her and I were standing under a street lamp. After I found Tanner with another girl at the party, I just kept running. Merel was the only one to realize I was missing, let alone she was the one to chase me.
"Calm down." She hushed.
I was trying to prevent myself from hyperventilating, making my breathes long like she always tells me to do. Merel looked around us and saw the only place with lights on was a small coffee shop. The place was old, like everything else in this city.
"C'mon." She said pulling me along.
Soaking wet, we went in the shop. There wasn't a soul around except an old Jewish lady behind the counter and a girl our age with jet black hair. She was sitting on top of one of the booth chairs, playing a guitar.
Merel pulled me to one of the tables and ordered me coffee. Normally she'd never let me have it, because I'm allergic to caffeine. Tonight it was an effort to make me feel better. After Merel handed me the drink, she walked over to the girl. I heard her say her name was Charlotte, and Merel asked her to play a song. She started playing Don't Stop Believin', one of my favorites.
Then Merel went to the phone and dialed a number. I realized soon she was calling her mom. It's much better than my mother. I'm not even supposed to date, so we would have to make up a lie. Merel always says, for every lie you tell, you gotta tell ten more to cover it up. It wasn't worth the effort tonight.
Once she hung up, she sat down with me and just starred, studying my face.
"What I said wasn't a lie. Your heart will heal, and someday you'll find somebody that will treat you right."
I huffed. "Someday? How 'bout never!"
"Hey, don't talk like that. You know you will. For someone who's favorite song is Don't Stop Believin', you sure have little faith."
Ugh, I hate when she's right. I sat there, pouting. Merel just proved she's smarter than me, AGAIN, and I got dumped, hard. I hate life.
»Two Years Later«
I was running down the street as fast as possible. Charlotte was right behind me, and we were going as fast as our feet could carry us.
Merel's been severely depressed ever since Seamus left. Her parents -against their better judgement- left town for a few days and left Merel home alone. The combo hit both Charlotte and I hard, like a ton of bricks.
We reached her doorstep, but I didn't know her house's lock combo. I did know how to get in their back door. There was no key, no lock pad, and I'm no lock smith. Nope, I was getting in with the dog. Her dog is insanely smart and knows how to unlock the patio door.
Charlotte and I jumped the rod iron fence and ran across her backyard. Their dog, Beans, was already barking at me from inside the house. That dog has known me for years and still barks. Silly puppy.
Once I got close to the sliding door, he automatically recognized me. I tapped the door by the handle, trying to indicate for him to unlock it.
I spoke in my best baby voice. "Come on little Bean-Bean. Unlock the door for auntie Sophia. C'mon! C'mon!"
