You stepped over the side of the skiff and jumped into the shallow water. Gabe was already pulling the small boat toward the beach to set the anchor. Your eyes went instantly to his shoulders, his muscles straining as he hauled on the rope. There was so much more to him than his sexy body, but you still couldn't keep your eyes or your hands off of him when he was wearing just his tank top. Dragging your eyes away from Gabe, you turned your gaze toward the tree line and out of the corner of your eye you thought you saw Birdy and Rain slipping back into the woods. They usually came to greet you when you arrived, but maybe they had chores they needed to finish. There were always chores to be done in Brown Town.
Gabe finished securing the skiff and ran to grab you in a hug, lifting you off your feet.
"Ready, Sweetie?" He crushed your chest to his, letting your feet dangle inches off the ground. You nodded and locked your fingers behind his neck and held on. Gabe began swinging you in a circle, your legs flying out further and further with each turn. You squealed and giggled and pressed your lips to his whenever you could stop laughing. It was the way he always welcomed you to Brown Town. Once he slowly stopped swinging you, the real kissing could begin. He was so gentle when he took your face in his hands and started by brushing his lips to yours. It was your favorite time with him.Walking down the path to the cabin, your arms wrapped around each other, Gabe began telling you about his plans for your day.
"We can start with feeding the chickens if that's alright." Gabe knew you would do whatever he wanted but he asked you anyway.
"Sure, Gabey. They're used to me now. I don't think they'll attack me like they did last time." Even though you both laughed at the memory, it had been really scary when all the chickens had suddenly turned on you and chased you screaming back into the cabin.
Rounding the corner, you saw the brood of chickens scattered in the yard near the large coop.
"Hey." Gabe stopped you as you began reaching for the bag of chicken feed. "Why don't you go in and gather the eggs while all the chickens are outside?" He gave you a little push toward the open door of the coop. He seemed to be grinning more than usual and you started to get a little suspicious. You loved his sense of humor and never got tired of his silly jokes. But it never hurt to be prepared for anything with him.
"OK, Babe. But if I'm not out in ten minutes, send a search party in for me."
"Yes, maam!" He saluted as you climbed up the short ladder and into the low ceilinged hut.Moving quickly to gather the eggs before the chickens realized you were in their house, you grabbed up one, two then three eggs. Reaching for the fourth egg, you saw a small gray box sitting in the nest. Before you even opened the box, you knew it must have been planted there by Gabe. Slipping the box into your pocket, you turned to climb back down the short stairs. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw Birdy and Rain again, darting away around the side of the cabin.
"So..." Gabe met you at the base of the coop stairs. "Find anything interesting?" He was beaming as you laid the eggs gently into the basket.
"Yes, funny thing. I found this in one of the nests." You pulled the small gray box out of your pocket and pulled open the lid. You had thought it would be a joke of some kind and you had been looking at Gabe with a little smirk on your face. But as you looked down at the open box, your eyes widened and your mouth dropped open. Nestled in a bed of white cotton, a beautiful silver pendant shone up at you. The face of the wolf was surrounded by the crescent of a moon and it was suspended on a black cord."Gabe, this is so beautiful." You breathed as you pulled the necklace out of the box and gave it to Gabe to slip over your head. You ran your fingers over the face of the pendant and then reached out to stroke Gabe's soft sideburns.
"Since you haven't had a chance to get a wolf tattoo like mine, I thought this would work for you for now." Gabe dipped his head shyly, pleased with his gift. You were pleased too and showed him how much with a slow deep kiss.
"It's just beautiful." You repeated.
Walking toward the cabin with the fresh eggs, Gabe suddenly grabbed your arm and pulled you toward Bam's trapper shack."Come here. I just need to grab something from inside." Gabe trotted toward Bam's shack and tugged you behind him. You only had a second to wonder what he would need from his brother's room when you looked up and saw Birdy and Rain quickly slip out of the door to the trapper shack and run around the corner of the small building.
"Gabey?" You tugged back on his arm, slowing him down only a little. "What is going on today?"
"What? Nothing? What do you mean?" He feigned surprise.
Reaching the door to the shack, Gabe pushed open the heavy door and led you inside. You had only been inside one time when Bam had given you a tour your first day on the island. But you immediately saw something so different, so out of place that you knew it had to be for you.
"Gabe..." His name came out as a whisper as tears sprang to your eyes. You walked straight up to the yellow camo Remington rifle and pulled it off the hook on the wall. "I love it."
You would never have believed you could be so touched and moved by a gun. But you knew what it must have taken for Gabe to buy this for you and it meant more to you than you could ever explain. Turning quickly to face him, you buried your head in his chest and let the tears fall. Gabe's arms went around you and he held you close until your tears subsided.
"If you hate it that much I'll take it back." He joked. You lifted your head and smacked him on the arm.
"Don't make me have to shoot you with my new gun." You smiled and kissed him on the cheek. "Thank you. It's just beautiful."Leaving the trapper shack with Gabe you felt like you were walking on air. Your new rifle was slung over your shoulder and your hand went repeatedly to the silver wolf necklace at your throat. Gabe held your hand tightly and as you looked at him, you could see the pulse in his neck rising and falling. He was nervous. What else did he have up his sleeve? You smiled down at the ground as you walked. This day was turning out so much better than you could ever have imagined.
"Sweetie, do you want to try out the rifle now?" Gabe turned to you. "We can head into the woods where we have target practice."
"Yes, that would be great! I can't wait to try out Yellow Fury." You laughed as the name popped into your head.
"That's just perfect!" Gabe laughed and led you into the woods. There were patches of blue sky overhead as you and Gabe walked into the clearing. Approaching the set of tree stumps that created the shooters nest, you swung Yellow Fury off your shoulder. Gabe sat down on one stump and motioned for you to sit on the other. You looked into his beautiful face and you couldn't resist leaning into him for a quick kiss.
"I love you, you know." Gabe's blue eyes traveled over your face.
"Yes. I know. I love you, too." You answered softly. The moment stretched out comfortably as you looked at each other.
"OK." Gabe finally leaned back and pointed toward the target about twenty feet away. "Let's see what you can do."You brought the rifle up and loaded it easily. Removing the cover from the sight, you leaned forward to rest the gun on the log in front of you. Out of the corner of your eye, you saw a flash of color as Birdy and Rain darted back into the tree line. You glanced sideways at Gabe, wondering what was going to happen next. Gabe, seeing your look, just shrugged and smiled. As you rested the gun on the log, you noticed a bright green cord stuck into the top of the wood and leading down the side. Pulling on the cord, you brought up a small green cloth bag. Shaking the bag gently, you felt something heavy inside and you grinned at Gabe as you handed him your rifle.
"More?" You asked.
"Just one more." He replied, his face starting to turn a little pink.
You pulled open the little drawstring bag and reached inside.Even before you pulled the object from the bag, you knew it was a ring. You tried not to cry again. But you smiled to yourself once you realized you were ok to cry about a rifle, but you were trying not to cry over the ring that symbolized Gabe's love and affection for you.
"It's just beautiful." You whispered. "Stop making me cry!" You pushed the small ring at Gabe and threw yourself at him, hugging his waist and letting your tears fall again. Gabe leaned your rifle on the wood stump and pulled your left hand free of his waist.
"I never knew what I wanted in a woman until I met you." He slipped the silver ring on your finger. "You are the cheese to my pizza, the peanut to my butter and the bumble to my bee. Will you marry me?"You laughed out loud before you said yes.
From just behind the nearby trees, Birdy and Rain held their hands over their mouths to stifle their giggles.
"Do you think she said yes?" Rain asked.
"I sure hope so." Birdy replied. "Because I am just worn out from running all over the place today!"
