2AM
Your eyes popped open and this time there was no way you were getting back to sleep. Rolling off the side of the bed, your feet hit the floor with a soft 'plop' and you decided you may as well get up and make some coffee.
3AM
Gabe tossed and turned on his small bed in his float house and tried to force himself to go back to sleep. He scratched at his curly hair and then scratched at his neck. Then tossing a meaty arm over his eyes, he made himself lay as still as possible for as long as possible. It was still so early.
4AM
After drinking your second cup of coffee, you figured you may as well go ahead and take a shower. Your clothes for your date with Gabe had been picked out well in advance and were hanging front and center in your small closet. The pale blue jeans and button down shirt fit you really well and showed off all of your assets. "And my front-sets." You joked as you stepped into the shower and let the hot water wash over you. One advantage of getting ready so early was that you had time to let your hair dry naturally. You smiled at your attempt to rationalize getting ready at 4AM for a 9AM date, but this wasn't just any date. It was a date with Gabe.
5AM
Gabe stepped out of the bush shower and grabbed for the towel he had hung on the branch of the tree. It was cooler than he expected outside and the chill bumps rose on his bare skin like sand on the beach. Pulling on a long plaid robe and shoving his feet into his boots, Gabe snatched up his rifle and trotted the few yards back to his float house. He knew it was still early but there were a lot of things he wanted to do before he picked you up in town.
6AM
You stepped into your jeans and finished pulling on your shirt and vest. It was going to be a long day so you knew you had to dress comfortably. You stifled a yawn with your hand and went to work on your makeup.
"Keep it simple." You reminded yourself. "Gabe likes it simple."
He was an amazing man who told you often that he wanted to see your face, not a face full of makeup. It had taken a while but finally his soft words and his gentle voice had convinced you.7AM
Gabe rushed down to the beach, not caring how much noise he made crashing through the woods. He was too excited to slow down. He wanted to get to the dock early and hopefully meet you at your place. He knew the plan was for you to meet him at the dock. You had insisted on that. But Gabe didn't like the idea of you sitting at the dock waiting for him so he picked up speed and ran for the skiff.
8AM
Rain dripped down your nose and you watched sullenly as the drops fell on your hands that were folded in your lap. You didn't even care anymore. It could rain, it could storm, it could even snow and you wouldn't care at all. Your perfect outfit was ruined.
You blinked away the rainwater and stared at water and the horizon. You sat waiting for Gabe to pick you up at the dock and sail you back with him to Brown Town. Dressing carefully for your date, it occurred to you that you really were completely unprepared for the weather. Gabe had said it rained often on the island but he never even wore a hat.
"The rain is really soft and warm. It's great." He had grinned as you made plans for your bush date.
But you hadn't accounted for the deluge of water that would pelt you even before you left Hoonah. So there you were, bareheaded and wet with the water from your soaked jeans turning them from pale to dark blue. You rolled your eyes and sighed, then trained them back on the horizon. Gabe wasn't late. You knew you were very early. The excitement that had started building the night before didn't let you get much sleep. It seemed that the time to meet him couldn't come fast enough and even though you were still an hour early leaving your house, you hadn't been able to wait any longer.
