The big man was lying in the dirt road, his arms stiff by his side, his thick chest heaving. The road was a small logging trail and not heavily traveled but still...
"Hello?" You called out and hoped he wasn't badly hurt.
"Hello." He replied shakily in a deep voice.
"Are you dead?" You asked and kicked at one meaty shoulder with the toe of your boot.
"I'm not sure. Kick me again." He said this with a smile full of humor and silvery metal.
"Did I hurt you?" You knew you hadn't hurt him but you played along.
As you watched, the man tilted his head back far enough to see your face and his smile grew.
"Hello. I'm Gabriel Brown." He said and stuck one hand up in the air for you to shake.
His hands were large and the muscles in his arms and chest were even larger. He was adorable and you couldn't make yourself stop smiling. You shifted your rifle higher up on your shoulder and tried to form the right question to ask.
"Why are you laying in the road?" You pulled on his hand a bit to try to help him up but he tugged his hand away from you and folded both hands over his chest.
"I'm hiding." He said simply and closed his eyes.
"You're lying in the road." You felt the need to state the obvious.
"Right. We are playing "It" and they are looking for me in the woods." Gabriel grinned and then opened his eyes and winked at you and his smile was so sweet you thought you had died and gone to heaven.
"What if a truck comes by?" Your logic was stunning as you smiled back at him.
"That's the beauty of my plan." Gabriel trained his bright blue eyes on you.
Your heart leaped into your throat and you tried to keep your eyes on his. But his thighs were calling you and your eyes answered the call.
"The beauty of your plan is to get run over?" You closed your eyes for a second to force yourself to stop staring at his body.
"Noooo." Gabriel finally rolled over and looked up at you. "They'll never think to look for me here and if a truck comes I'll just roll out of the way and then roll back." He grinned with pride at his idea.
"You are crazy. You realize that, don't you?" You had to be honest.
"Crazy like a fox." He wiggled his eyebrows at you and held out a hand. "Want to join me?"
For a second you looked at Gabriel and then at the woods beyond him. Then you leaned over and peered as far down the logging road as you could, looking for any oncoming trucks. Making your decision, you laid your long hunting rifle down on the ground and stretched out beside Gabriel on the road. Turning your head to the side, you looked into his eyes.
"You look familiar." You said.
"I've seen you hunting in these woods before." He said. For an instant Gabe's eyes slid away from yours. Then back again. Your own eyes narrowed with understanding.
"Is this some weird bush pick-up technique?" You wiggled your butt on the hard gravel to dislodge a particularly pesky pebble.
"Umm. Sorta." Gabriel hesitated and bit nervously at his lower lip.
"You can't just walk up and ask a girl out on a date?" You asked with a pretend scowl.
"Yes. But where's the fun in that?" He replied.Gabriel rolled over onto his side and smiled a full smile at you. Rolling over to face him, you had to admit his pick-up technique was definitely unique.
"We're gonna get run over." You glanced once more down the road.
"I'll roll you out of the way if a truck comes." Gabriel answered sincerely.Just a few yards away, where the trees began to get dense, the small group of siblings paused their game of "It" and watched their brother lying happily with you on the hard gravel road.
"They're gonna get run over." Birdy said with a shake of her head.
"Nah. He'll roll her out of the way if a truck comes." Matt grinned and smacked his sister on the arm. "You're it!"
