The semicircle of small children sat on the grass staring up at Gabe. Their eyes were round with wonder.
"Some of my family lives in this cabin here," He pointed to his right." And one of my brothers live here; he pointed to the trapper shack, one lives here; he pointed to the green tent, and one lives here; he looked up as he pointed to Bear's treehouse. All of the little eyes gawked up at the top of the tree. With his back to the tree, Gabe didn't see when Bear smiled and waved down to them and then finished with two "thumbs-up".
Leaning closer to the wide-eyed kids, Gabe lowered his voice until it was deep and gravelly.
"But don't go trying to climb that tree." He warned with a serious face. "Because if you do, the Bear that lives up there might eat you!" He finished with a growl. When all the kids started laughing, a look of confusion crossed Gabe's face.
"He won't eat us!" One little girl exclaimed and pointed up to the tree. When Gabe turned around and saw Bear grinning and waving, he rolled his eyes and looked sheepishly back down at the children.
"Ok, he really is a friendly Bear."
Watching your husband interacting so easily with all the kids who came from the school in town for the tour of Brown Town, you knew he would make a perfect father. His eyes lit up every time a new batch of kids showed up on the small boat. The children's ages ranged from five to eight years old and Gabe made sure he always met the boat at the beach. He would lift them out of the boat one by one, swinging them around and making them squeal with laughter.
You didn't know what excited you more, seeing him having so much fun with the children or the sight of his big smile or possibly the tightness of the muscles in his arms and chest. Truthfully, it was everything. Gabe was the whole package and he was yours.
The time with the visiting children always seemed to fly by. Once Bam and Birdy were done teaching them the basics of how to use a rifle, then Noah and Rainy took over, showing them how to use a bow and arrow. The young girls were especially amazed at seeing how strong and capable Birdy and Rainy were.
"Just because I like makeup and jewelry, doesn't mean I'm not tough." Rainy would always tell them with a smile.Once Ami had prepared a typical bush dinner with venison or crab, Billy would sit all the kids down around the campfire and begin to tell stories of life in the bush. Finally, the kids and their teachers piled back onto the small boat for the hour-long ride back to town.
The whole Brown family stood on the beach to see them off, waving their arms with shouts of "more" and "come back soon". Once the boat was a few yards away, everyone on the beach began to howl 'goodbye.' It was the moment most of the kids had been waiting for and when the children began to howl back, the sound never failed to make a happy shiver run up your spine.
But your absolute favorite part of "tour day" was still to come. After spending time with all the kids, Gabe was ready and eager to get to work on a family of his own. He would always slip an arm around your shoulder and begin leading you back to the cabin he had built just before you got married Alone in the small cabin, just the two of you, your favorite part of the day would begin and would often last well into the evening if you were lucky.
You stood waiting until the last of the howls faded away and the rest of the family had begun walking back down the path. But this time when Gabe slipped his arm around you, he whispered in your ear.
"Come with me." He began leading you away from the path and toward the water. The frown on your face made him laugh, but when you saw he was walking toward the skiff, you started to laugh, too.
"You can't be serious?" You stared up into his face, not really sure what to think.
"Yes, I'm serious." Gabe made a sad frowny face and you laughed again. "I was thinking if you got pregnant in the skiff, that would mean the baby would love being on boats." His thick arms wound around your waist and you felt yourself enveloped in his warmth and his woodsy scent. Your skin tingled at his touch and you knew you wouldn't say no. You nodded your head and Gabe happily lifted you by the waist into the small boat.
"So, next time?" He grinned as he positioned himself gently over you. "We'll make love in the woods."
"Makes sense. That means our child would love being in the forest. And the time after that?" You prompted and pulled his face close to yours.
"I'm not sure." He closed his eyes and pressed his mouth to yours. Your eyes closed as you felt his soft lips moving gently over yours, but your eyes suddenly popped wide open as you heard him mumble something that you could swear included the words, 'next time', 'rifle' and 'deer costume'.
