"There is absolutely no way we are going to have another baby."
Even as the words were coming out of your mouth, your husband Gabe was grinning and grabbing at your hips, pulling you back into bed with him. As you fell back onto his firm chest, his thick arms wrapped around you and you found yourself trapped in his warm embrace. His soft curly hair brushed at the back of your neck and you groaned loudly.
"Here." You shoved the foil condom packet at Gabe and rolled over to face him. "I mean it. No more babies."
It stunned you how quickly the smile fell from his face and was replaced by a look so miserable that you could barely stand it.
"You're serious, aren't you?" He sincerely couldn't believe that you wanted to stop after only three children.
When you and Gabe were first married he told you he wanted to have seven children, just like his parents. He already knew what their names would be and he had been working the last four years to build a cabin large enough to accommodate everyone. The first two girls had come quickly and easily and you were convinced you could do that five more times with no problem. But then came baby number three. Your first boy was determined he was going to stay inside for as long as he could and when he did decide to leave his warm cocoon, he was going to fight his way out. After thirty hours of labor, your mother-in-law decided you needed to go to the clinic in Hoonah to deliver. After another twelve hours of labor your baby boy finally made his appearance.
At nine pounds even, Gabriel Bryan Brown screamed into this world with a head full of curly dark hair just like his dad. They always say you forget the pain of the labor and delivery when you see your beautiful baby. They lied. You were sore for days and wouldn't let Gabe touch you for weeks. Now, two months later and your husband was grabbing for you every chance he got. And finally you were ready to say yes. With one condition.
Gabe held the foil packet with the tips of his fingers like he was afraid it was going to burn his hand off. His frown was deep but so cute that you almost gave in and told him to toss aside the condom. Almost.
"I know Bryan hurt a lot coming out." Gabe laid the foil packet on the blanket and sat up in the bed, stretching one leg across your hip. You traced the outline of the wolf tattoo on his leg with your finger.
"But you said yourself you forgot about the pain as soon as you saw him."
You glanced left and right guiltily before bringing your gaze back up to his.
"I lied so you wouldn't think I was a bad mother." Gabe's eyebrows shot up and you laughed at the look of shock on his face. "I'm sorry, honey. But it hurt really bad and the labor went on so long that I don't think I can go through that again."
You knew your words were a huge disappointment to Gabe and you watched his face as he tried to come to terms with the fact that he wouldn't have any more than three children. It wasn't hard to recognize the sadness on his face and a small, sharp fissure began to crack your resolve.
"I guess three children is enough. Right?" He said slowly as he used his leg to inch himself closer to you.
"Yeah." You agreed hesitantly.
"They really are great kids." Gabe slid the rest of his body over yours and reached down for the condom packet.
"They are great." You looked into the eyes of your wonderful husband and thought of the three beautiful children he gave you.
"Here. Open this for me." Gabe handed you the condom as he leaned down to nibble on the side of your neck.
As you felt the first stirrings of heat inside you from his kiss and you heard the footsteps of your children already up and playing outside, your resolve broke with a sound like a baby's laughter. Flinging the condom aside like a tiny gold Frisbee, you wrapped your arms around your husband and crushed him to you.
"What could it hurt?" You whispered.
