Driving Gabe and his "girlfriend" around town wasn't how you had planned to spend your weekend. But you had spent your two days off from work doing just that. Gabe was a great guy and when he and his friend stopped by and asked you for rides, what could you say? Yes, you could have laughed loudly in their faces and slammed the door. But it was Gabe. And he was a sweet guy. So you smiled at the couple and ushered them to your car.

On the second day, when Gabe stopped by to ask for a ride back to the ferry, you were ready. You had been sitting on your couch, sucking back a fruit smoothie that was supposed to make you healthy and slim. So far all it did was make you run to the bathroom. Is that how it made you lose weight? All that running back and forth to the toilet?

"Let's get this show on the road!" You tried not to smile too brightly knowing this was their last day together. It took everything in you to keep from speeding through the small town to the ferry dock, then executing a screeching, sliding wild turn, popping open the back door and slinging the smiling young girl right out of the still rolling car. It took literally everything you had in you, but you managed to get them safely through town to their destination.

The car came to a stop with more of a lurch than you had intended as your foot involuntarily slammed onto the brake, and your back seat passengers pitched forward with a jolt.

"Sorry, guys." You apologized weakly.

Unfazed, Gabe and his female companion wrestled off their seatbelts and pushed open the doors. As Gabe reached into the front seat of the car for the small suitcase, your eyes instinctively went to his.

"Let it go, girl. Just let it go." You spoke to yourself and turned your head away as he snagged the brightly colored bag and slammed the door shut.

"I'll be right back!" Gabe said over his shoulder as the couple trotted up the ramp to the waiting ferry.

Tapping your fingers nervously on the steering wheel, you tried to prepare yourself. The ride back to his place wasn't long but you would be alone with Gabe for all that time and your feelings for him were still raw. This time, you watched as Gabe handed her the suitcase and said goodbye to her. It wasn't clear by their body language if they had made the decision to take their relationship to a higher level. A long sigh slipped out of you as you watched Gabe place his hands on her shoulders and gave her a sweet, gentle kiss on her cheek.

"Where can I find a gentleman like that?" You said out loud to your steering wheel. When the steering wheel didn't answer, you dropped your head onto its rounded top and pouted like a two-year-old.

"Let's roll!" Gabe said as he dropped into the passenger seat and buckled his seatbelt.

He seemed oddly happy after dropping off a girl who he said he really liked. Did the date not go well? You hadn't noticed anything unusual in how they were treating each other but still...it was a little odd.

Being nosy and blunt wasn't your most attractive feature, but it always got you the answers you wanted, so taking in a deep breath, you asked the question.

"How did your date go?"

"Not bad." Gabe answered and bobbed his head.

You glanced quickly over at him and saw a half smile on his face. Trying not to get too distracted by his lustrous dark curls and bright blue eyes, you put the car in gear and moved down the road.

"She seems really sweet."

You thought you would try to keep things light between you and let him know you were interested in his life. And you were 100% interested. Just not for the reason he thought. How many days had his happy face invaded your mind and his silly jokes given you a reason to smile? How many nights had his firm, muscular body invaded your dreams and left you hot and breathless, desperately wishing for his touch?

But Gabe was only a friend and if that was all you would ever be, then it would have to be enough.

"She is really sweet." He said in a deep voice and you tried not to cry for your loss. "But we're not going to see each other anymore."

"What!" You said way more loudly than you meant to and a tiny spark of heat began to burn in your chest.

Had she hurt him? Your anger fired up. Had that crazy girl pushed him aside? In your mind you began to attack her character, her judgment and just for the fun of it, her looks. What was wrong with that woman? Couldn't she see what a wonderful man Gabe was? What was she  looking for anyway? He was as close to perfect a man as you had ever met and it stunned you to think she couldn't see that.

Gabe was staring at you and you knew you needed to get control of yourself. Your hands gripped the steering wheel tightly and you wrestled with your anger and the hurt for him that swelled in your heart.

"I couldn't pay enough attention to her." He said softly and glanced quickly at you and then back out the window, finally resting his gaze on his hands that were twisted together  in his lap.

"Why not?" You asked. "I know you have a big family. Were there just too many people around?" Knowing you asked and answered your own question, you gritted your teeth and tried to be silent and let him answer you.

"No..." He hesitated and chewed on his bottom lip.

Something was bugging him and you wanted to let him take his time and let it all out. You remembered that once he started talking, he would tell you what he wanted you to know. Waiting wasn't your strong suit but Gabe was worth it. So you held onto the steering wheel, held your tongue and waited.

"Can you pull over for a  minute?" Gabe's voice was deep and soft but you heard the urgency in it and so you steered your car over to the side of the road and turned off the engine.

"Sure. Sure, Gabe. What's going on?" You realized you were only a few hundred yards from Gabe's place and he could easily walk from there. But he didn't try to take off his seatbelt or get out of the car. You didn't  look over at him because being so close to him and without the roar of the car engine,  the silence between you made you fearful. Could he hear your heart pounding like a hot beating drum in your ears? Could he make out the slight tremor in your voice as you said his name, letting it roll softly from the tip of your tongue?

Gabe took in a deep breath and his head slowly turned and you forced yourself to turn and look into his eyes. He was so beautiful that you could only stare and try to force down the heat that flowed down past your stomach to the tight place between your thighs.

"I couldn't stop thinking of you." He whispered and your heart stopped.

When his large hand reached out and grasped your chin, the tears were already falling and you were already reaching for him.

Gabe was an amazing man and you were glad he was finally happy.

You pulled up the parking break and locked the car doors and you smiled into his eyes.
