Maya's POV

"Riles I haven't heard you laugh like this in such a long time," I say in between my laughs.

"Yeah- I- I know," she can barely say.

"You two are crazy," Ian says in the background. "What's so funny anyways?"

Riley grabs my phone from my hand and shows Ian what we were looking at.

"IS THAT GUY DRESSED UP AS PEPE THE FROG?"

"YES," We scream as we begin to laugh even more.

"WOW. Now I see," he says as he chuckles. "That really is funny."

"No duh, Pepe is so funny."

"Anyways I should leave," I say as I get up.

"No stay," Riley says as she grabs my arm.

"Seriously stay." Ian insists as well so I can't say no.

"What do you want to laugh about now?" I ask.

"You remember Farkle?"

"How could I not?" I holler.

"He used to be so obsessed with us!" Riley says as she laughs some more.

"Man I miss Farkle," I say.

"Yeah Me too."

"We need to get in touch with him. Maybe go out for lunch just the fou- I mean three of us."

"Yeah just us 2 girls and a Farkle."

"Haha yeah."

"No but seriously Riley I need to get-"

My phone vibrates as a new text message arrives.

*Hello is this Ms. Maya Hart. *

The caller ID reads 'Lucas' but it doesn't seem like Ranger Rick.

*Yes this is she. May I ask who's this? *

*Hi my name is Nurse Katie Jones. *

*Hi Katie may I ask why you are texting me from my best friends phone? *

*I have some rather... tragic news. *

*What happened? *

"Maya what's wrong?" Riley asks.

"Huh?"

"Why do you look so worried?"

"Don't worry about it."

It seems like forever before she responds.

*Ms. Hart I am sorry to inform you that your friend Lucas has been in an accident. He is located at the Crystal Lake Hospital on Temple and Rosemary. *

*Why are you texting me, though? Why not Riley Mathews? *

*Mr. Friar said to call or text Maya but not Riley. *

"He didn't want to worry you," I say aloud.

"What? Maya what's happening?" Riley asks again, this time with more fear in her voice.

"Nothing Riles but I seriously have to go."

I give Riley and Ian a quick hug before I run out the door.

"Wait!" I hear Riley scream in the background before she starts running towards me.

"I got to get to my damn car," I say so I start running faster. Halfway there I hear the sound of a new text message.
