Chapter 26: Trying again

Ella’s POV

After yesterday and not being able to succeed in walking I wanted to try again. I could tell that it was worrying Jake but I know I can do this. And even after telling him that I could do it, he was still weary. But I don’t want to be in a wheelchair for my wedding just because I (Jake) was afraid to walk again. That just isn’t an option for me; it would be no fun! The only way to get better at this walking issue is to keep trying. And I am determind that I can do it.

The nurses did their usual morning rutine; getting me and jake breakfast and geiving checks and my medicine. I was getting used to their kind treatment and doing everything for me. But I was bored of not doing anything for myself. This is another reason why I want to be able to walk again. Lying on a bed for ages gives you very bad butt cramp making practically everything go numb.

“Okay Ella, are you ready to start your walking practice again?” Dr. Carlisle asked as he looked up from his clipboard. I smiled with a nod. I sat on the edge of my bed and Jake held out two hands for me to take. I gave him a reassuring smile and he just showed a nervous one. I could tell by the look in his eyes that he was scared. Pushing my weight down on his hands I stood up, then smiled at my success. I faced him and looked up into his worried brown eyes.

“Jake?” I asked softly and he whispered a ‘yes’ leaning his head down on mine. “It’s going to be ok” I told him.

“Ella are you sure?”

“Yes I’m sure. I really want to do this” I gave him another smile. “It’s going to be ok. I promise” I pulled Jake down to my level and kissed his lips reassuringly. He let out a little chuckle.

“Okay then baby” I smiled again and then we began to walk.

I could feel Jakes eyes on me at all times, he was still on guard. Once we had reached the door by Dr. Carlisle he smiled with an observant grin.

“Well done, you’re improving. Your attitude towards this is more confident now. Would you like to try on your own?” he asked and a big smile shone bright on my face.

“Yes please. I would love to” I spoke confidently but I could feel Jakes grip on my hands tighten. I looked up to him with a pleading smile. “Jake I can do this. Please just let me try” I begged but he still looked unsure.

“You know what happened yesterday” he said warningly at me.

“Yes I know but like Dr. Carlisle said, I’m getting better and I’m stronger now. More than yesterday anyway” I reasoned with him. He let out a long sigh but after a minute of silence he agreed.

“Be careful!” he told me and I smiled.

“Yay. Thanks. Love you” I said happily and kissed his cheek.

Slowly he let go of my hands and I stood there. Feeling s little more preasure in my stomach area I shook it off. “okay Ella, if you can make it to the chair and back we can think about walking in the corridors for more practice” I nodded at Dr. Carlisle’s words and began walking towards the chair. With every step the shooting pain eased and when I reached the chair I happily spun around nd walked back to them. I finally saw Jake smile, a smile that showed happiness.

“See, I told you I could do it” I told Jake with a tone that said I-told-you-so, with a cheeky smile along with it.

“Yes you did. I’m so proud of you Ella” I gave him a bright happy smile.

“Well done Ella. This is great progress. Maybe we could try walking down the corridors a little later on” Dr. Carlisle said and I smiled nodding enthusiastically.

I stood on my tiptoes to give Jake a kiss on his lips but as I did a bolt of fire burning pain shot up my leg and circled my waist. “Argg” I growed and I stood back on my feet right away, holding onto Jake’s arms for support helping me stand, while the pain continued to cause me difficulty to stand.

“Ella…?” Jake asked worridly, but I couldn’t find words to say.

“Sit her down” Dr. Carlisle ordered but I shook my head.

“I don’t want to move” I said automatically through my teeth. “Moving will just aggravate it” I told them.

“Ella what can I do? Please… tell me what I can do” Jake begged.

“N… Nothing Jake. Just don’t let me fall” I said breathless.

“Never” he said and kept his arms strong.

My eyes were tightly shut. The pain was slowly beginning to disappear. My breathing was slowing down to a normal pase but it was still through my nose.

Afterv a few moments of silence, the pain was almost gone, I opened my eyes again. I looked over to Dr. Carlisle first. “How’s your stomach?” he asked and I showed an uneaven  smile.

“Sore” I replied simply. He nodded as if it was the right answer.

“That doesn’t surprise me. You likely just streached a muscle ligerment that hadn’t fully recovered yet” He told me and it seemed about right as he description matched what I remembered I had felt. “I suggest you take a seat and I will get a some checks done to make sure there is no serious damage done” I smiled with a nod.

Before leaving he made sure that I sat down ok withb no additional pain. Then he left to fetch a nurse to take care of the checking over.

Jake stood standing right in front of me. He held my hands in his and looked down to me. “Are you okay baby?” he asked worriedly.

“Yeah I’m fine now. Thanks” I replied.

“You are mor than welcome. I would never let you go. You’re sure you are ok?” he questioned.

“Yes Jake, I’m fine” I said with a smile.

he bent down to my level and kissed my lips softly. Taking one hand out of his I placed it on his neck and pulled him in closer. The kiss remained gentle. We continued to make out until we heard the door open. Jake’s lips left mine and he smiled, his perfect lips curling into a happy grin. Then he stood up and took a seat in the chair by my side, still holding my hand.

“Miss. Martain, would you mind lying down for me please?” asked the nurse in a kind voice. I did as she said without a problem.

She placed her hand on my waist too feel if anything was wrong.

I squeezed Jakes hand as she added pressure. “Sorry” she apologised when she saw the discomfort in my face. I had my eyes scrunched up and a fake smile that had replaced a genuine smile.

She then asked me a few questions which I replied to. When she had finished she left and said that she would let Dr. Carlisle know what she had written down on her clipboard.

He came in and explained that the muscle ligament would heal on its own but said I should tell him if I feel any strain from it.

Once he left it was just me and Jake. But we remained in silence. After a while he mentioned about visitors and that my family or friends hadn’t been to see me for a while. I agreed it would be nice to see them again. I smiled and asked him if he could let them know how I was doing and that they could visit tomorrow.

As he did so I started up at the ceiling thinking about nothing in particular.

Soon I had drifted off to sleep.
