~Set one week after the last chapter took place~
Bree's POV~
I breathed in the fresh air, the smell of freedom. Yes, I mean the typical cliché freedom of those afternoons when school is finished and you don't have another work shift until tomorrow. It may be a petty understanding of liberation, but it still counts.
I walked out of Summit High's school gates, enjoying the time to myself. After the whole disaster with my brother, I ended up missing a whole year of school. But, I couldn't let it hold me back - Chase would've wanted me to go to school regardless, so I'm re-doing my education for him. I couldn't bring myself to go back to Mission Creek High, so I transferred to a smaller school - Summit High. It's not as good as Mission Creek, but at least there aren't any teachers like Perry, a perk during senior year. Plus, practically no one knows about Chase at S.H., so I guess that's a bonus.
I continued thinking as I strolled down main street, smiling as I passed friendly shop owners, and hugging my books closer, cheeks burning red, as I caught eye contact with stray hotties.
I turned onto the road which connects with our street, stopping by a convenient stone wall so that I could shove my heavy books into my shoulder bag. I must've been deep in my own little world, because I jumped as something - or, rather, someone - walked passed me. There was a gleam of brown, of pale skin, and a force against my shoulder as the person brushed passed.
I looked around, but was seemingly unable to identify the individual.
It was almost as if they'd vanished.I shook my head, sighing as I slung my bag back over my shoulder, and continued my way back home. I watched the ground intently as my sneakers slapped against the concrete, bringing sound into the otherwise quiet street.
When it happened, I don't know, but I was suddenly sprawled out across the ground, listening to a boy mutter apologies as he helped me up.
"Shit," I cursed as I noticed the small tear of fabric in my jeans.
"I'm really sorry" the boy mumbled again, although the way he said it made me think he didn't really mean it.
I looked up, finally getting a glimpse of who the voice belonged to. He looked around my age, maybe slightly younger, and was extremely hot. His brown hair laid messily on the top of his head, and the plaid shirt he wore defined his muscular features. But it was his eyes that intrigued me the most. The way their chestnut brown colour swirled like a captivating whirlpool, the way they sparkled with a knowing look in them, the familiarity in them...
"Chase?" I blurted out.
The boy froze, his panic was evident. He quickly pushed pass me and ran.
"Oh my God..." I breathed and I sped after him.
When he was taken, Adam and I swore that we wouldn't use our bionics anymore. But this was different. I followed him into an ally-way, skidding to a stop when he disappeared from sight. I frantically looked around, panting slightly.
The ally was quiet, uncomfortably quiet. He was definitely still here, but where?
"Crap!" I screamed as a sudden surge of electricity flew past me, missing my a mere centimetre. I spun towards it's origin. Chase stood there, a ball of purple energised matter swelling from his outstretched palm, a smug grin on his face. Since when did he have Electrokinesis as an ability!?
"Sorry, sis" he more-or-less spat. "Nothing personal".
He sent another wave of currents in my direction, but I was ready for him this time. I quickly dodged his attempts and sped behind him, catching him off guard. What the hell was wrong with him? I kicked him hard in the back, sending him to the ground.
He grunted at the impact, but quickly forced himself back up. He lamely attempted to punch me in the jaw, but I was too fast for him, and instead his fist impacted with a clump of concrete behind me.
He shrugged off the pain like it was nothing, and sent his fist flying in my direction once again. This time, it met its target. I yelped as pain erupted from the side of my face; a bruise would definitely form there later.
I glanced at his complacent grin. I may have not seen my brother for two years, but he was already pissing me off.
