Bree's POV-
A week later and Davenport lost the trial. We were so close! I mean, we almost won it. Davenport was almost free. But, in the end, he was convicted. Tears were shed, hearts were broken. All I could think about was Chase. God, he must be so scared. I can't start to imagine what they might be doing to him. Adam, Leo and I were sitting on the couch, just waiting for more bad news to strike. Bad luck comes in threes. The first was Chase. The second was Mr Davenport being found guilty. The third one, who knows! Usually the third one is the worst, and, seeing how bad the other two are, I hope the third one doesn't come. This is all just too much for me.
"This is all his fault" I muttered, thinking out loud.
"What?" Leo asked.
I stood up angrily.
"This is all Chases fault!" I screamed. "If he had just listened to me then the FBI wouldn't have him and Mr Davenport wouldn't be in jail. I hate him!" I regretted the words as soon as the left my mouth. I quickly sat back down, shaking all over.
Adam reached over and hugged me tightly.
I enjoyed the comfort of his bone breaking squeezes.
Leo sighed.
"We all wish we hadn't said some things" he said softly.
"Huh?" I asked, my voice cracking.
"Chase and I were fighting that day" he admitted, tears rolling down his cheek. "It was over such a stupid, yet important, thing. And now, the last thing I ever did with him was fight".
Leo was breaking, bit by bit. We all were.
I reached over to him and, not really being able to reach far enough to hug him, stroked him hair sadly.
"I know Leo, it's not the same without him. Both of them. But we have to be strong" I told him reassuringly. "Just be strong".
Chase's POV-
I was strapped to my chair, alone. I sat still, staring up at the ceiling. My arms hurt and I felt dizzy from all the blood samples they'd taken from me. I was hungry, lonely, in pain and, at the same time, angry. Angry with the FBI. Angry with Mr Davenport. Still angry with Leo from the fight we'd had. But most of all, angry with myself. If I had just done what Bree had said, just left the air vent alone, I wouldn't be in this situation. But, if I hadn't rushed in to save the poor girl, she'd have been squashed underneath an air vent and I would have a ton of guilt on my shoulders. I heard a small click from the other side of the room, followed by shallow footsteps. I smirked.
"Hey Gordon" I greeted him.
Agent Gordon and I had become closer during the past week, but he was still an idiot who was still extremely full of himself. I could feel his smile as he unlocked the chains strapped to my wrists.
"Hi C" he said.
He'd recently started to drop the formality of calling me Mr Davenport and stepped down to Chase for a while, later taken to just calling me C.
I sat up, pain shooting up my left arm.
He handed me a small paper bag. I took it gratefully and peeped inside at its contents. Confused, I poured the objects into my hand. I stared at the two slices of bread. I glanced up at Gordon, who sighed.
"Food's scarce here" he said solemnly.
I shook my head.
"New Zealand has got heaps of food. Last time I checked, this country wasn't dying of starvation".
Gordon chuckled.
"No, at this research lab. Due to its isolation, we only get food deliveries every month" he told me. He nodded at the slices in my hand. "That there is a gold mine at the moment. Saver that, it's all you've got today".
I nodded and tore one of the pieces in half, stuffing the other slice and a half back into the paper bag, stuffing the other half into my mouth.
Gordon handed me a bottle of water.
I snatched it off of him and took a big swig. After downing half the bottle, I wiped my mouth and handed it back to him.
"Thanks" I smiled.
He nodded and motioned for me to lie down again. I reluctantly did, sliding down the bed and sticking my arms out so he could slap the chain back onto my wrists. He started chaining them ever so slowly. Half way through the process, he grinned.
"I've got some good news for you C" he announced. "The first part of your testing is done, which means no more blood samples or DNA testing".
I breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank god!" I cried happily.
"So," he continued. "You're now up to stage two: testing your bionics. All you have to do is show us what you're capable of".
I nodded slowly, taking this all in.
Gordon finished my strapping and turned to leave. When he was almost at the door, he glanced over at me. He winked. "It also means that you don't need to be chained down here anymore. You get your own privet room. It does interrupt the signal from you bionic chip though".
I grinned.
"Anything is better than this" I said.
Gordon smiled and stepped out the door, slamming it closed behind him.
