Morning comes and goes as we find ourselves 2 hours into our trip. No dwellers yet, but I fear our travels will not be without them. Maura seems to be feeling well enough to be keep a good pace. The elders of the group, John and Allison have even surprised me as they have not asked for a break yet. A feared adrenaline I learned keeps you running so to speak to keep you out of danger.

"Right up here is the highway. We can follow it all the way to Tacom." Luke announces.

Once we break the tree line, I feel at bit better about our chances of not being flanked. Abandoned cars scatter the roadways, leaving us with perfect shelter.

"Should we be out in the open like this?" John questions.

"If we were to be attacked, this area gives us a better advantage at safely and attacking." I explain.

John nods and holds close to his wife.

We come up on a large SUV, Rabbit giving me a look. I scan the vehicle and find the keys are in it. I try the engine and to my surprise it starts.

"It only has a half a tank of gas but it will help." I shrug.

Everyone files in, placing the food and supplies in the back. I drive carefully through the mazes of cars, getting to just about 15 miles outside the city.

"We should camp out here tonight. That bus should offer us decent protection. We will work in shifts on look outs." Grey speaks.

"No." I disagree. "I will be the lookout. The rest of you sleep."

It's true, I don't get nearly as tired as the mundanes and I feel it's the least I can do.

The group enters the bus, finding spots to sleep. Luke stays outside with me, looking up into the sky.

"Do you hate that this happened to you?" He asks.

I shrug. "I hate that it took my best friend away."

"I'm sorry." He says meekly.

"Why are you apologizing? Your family was murdered by what I almost became. Anger is a mute point on how I feel about that."

"I'll see them again. I'm just thankful you all found me, if not who knows what would have happened."

I smile at Luke. "You are with good people."

He sucks air through his teeth. "I'm not sure about Maura."

"Well, when we get there, we will deal. You should sleep, we have a long day ahead of us tomorrow."

He nods. "Be safe, Sam."

"Goodnight Luke."

The night proves uneventful, giving me plenty of time to stare at Rabbit as he sleeps. We didn't talk much today but he tends to get like that while we attend to scavenger business. Hours pass by as I watch the sun rise. Grey is the first awake, grabbing two bottles of water from the back of the truck.

"Anything?"

"No, just a few deer and woodland creatures."

"Speaking of animals, are you ok?" Grey asks combing his beard with his fingers.

The burning in my stomach screams to me.

"If you don't mind, my meal for the day is right there." I point. A giant buck grazes close to the edge of the highway giving me a perfect angle to sneak up. Grey dismisses taking out his gun for watch. I make sure the animal feels no pain as I get my fill. I come back to Grey and Rabbit talking. I swish my mouth with water trying to relieve myself of the copper taste. The rest of the group scatters about the road, eating protein bars and wafers from the supply. I stay hidden behind the bus until my eyes adjust after the feeding.
