"We are nearly out of supplies, Sam. We need to make a move soon." Grey speaks.
I pinch the bridge of my nose, concentrating on a plan. Grey saved my life from the lab and has turned me into the fighter and survivor I am today. Since that day, I've adapted to the changes the virus has given me, heightened senses, almost flawless skin, and piercing ice blue eyes.
"We will head south then. We know the brigade has already moved through the area, so the chance of being spotted is slim. We will scavenge the area then make camp. There has to be cellar that was left untouched. Rabbit, ready the group."
Rabbit, another refugee that Grey and I came about along our long journey of staying hidden. Just 22 years old, only survivor of his family after watching vampires and under-worlders slaughter them. He has been a huge asset to our team and has become very dear to me. I keep him close but I know he can handle himself, I need him too.
I look to Grey who nods me forth. I head down the long hallway of the bunker we sought safety in. I meet the group and listen in to the end of Rabbit's reprisal.
"And you are positive there is food there?" Maura sasses.
"Look." I speak sharply. "There are no guarantees, we all know that. If you would like to stay here then by all means, if not, get your gear ready."
Maura has always been a bit headstrong, but who can blame her? She's the only woman who survived her master and broke out to tell the story.
"I will not be captured again, Sam. I don't care what the stories say about you, nothing can be as bad as being a sex slave to a blood thirsty vampire. So fuck your bad ass persona."
I turn on my heel, rage coursing through me. "You'll never know the pain of hearing the person you love, tortured and killed while you lay on a metal slab not even ten feet away from them."
"Yeah? I've heard my fair share of innocent girls dying."
"I'm sure you weren't told that they were just trying to save your life." I spit.
Maura looks at me in confusion. I'm not sure how many any of these people know but I'm also not sure I want them to know that I have the virus in me. To this day, I do not know why I didn't die. Grey calls me a hybrid of sorts. I still have a beating heart but am "blessed" with vampire's abilities.
We set out, moving towards the south. Another part about the virus is I never truly find myself thirty or hungry, for human food that is. I taught myself how to drain an animal just enough so that it doesn't kill them. I remember the first time Rabbit caught me, he was appalled, scared. But he never left my side. Never told anyone. We walk 6 hours straight before coming upon the burning remains of an old town.
"Search the grounds first of any dangers, then we seek out the bunkers." I command and walk through with Grey and Rabbit by my sides.
"Maura was wrong but do not dismiss what she went through." Grey talks gently.
"I know, I plan on apologizing." I sigh walking past the corpses of a young family.
"All clear, Sam." Asher, another refugee reports.
"Great, let's look for the bunkers now."
It doesn't take long before we find a bunker. The food supply is massive and even more so on ammo and weapons. We decide to make this a home base for the next few days until the next passage is planned. This bunker is rather large, separating off into several rooms. Photos of families line a part of the wall and I instantly realize it is the family we walked passed earlier. The room looks very much lived in and instantly my senses provide me with an answer I all along assumed.
