"You could get me this amazing gift and I would treat you with heaps of food. Okay? Sounds perfect!" Navya chirped with excitement, "You REALLY need to start eating so that's the only treat you get!"
"Hmm okay, whatever." I flipped my phone back and front and then unlocked it.
I started scrolling down my call log.
"I need a real good gift, get that clear. I mean, I don't even ask anything from you the entire year!" I raised my brows up giving her a 'really now?' expression.
"What? Its my birthday" she pouted innocently.
"Okay fine" I grunted, still not finding any interest in this topic.
Maybe it is about that phone call he received that night because as far as I remember, I have not done anything.
"We could even-" I lost her after that.
Why doesn't this damn thing just ring?!
I had left uncountable number of voice mails and now even his mailbox was full of all my messages, I was sure of it.
Was he even okay? My heart beat raced at just the though that something bad must have happened to him.
"Staring at that won't make it sing a tune" Navya clicked her fingers in front of my face, annoyed by my non participation in her birthday plans, which was the next week.
"I was just.. checking.. Instagram" I lied.
"We both know what you've been checking for past five days" she stated the obvious and sat cross legged in front of me, "You went to his office, you checked his place, you tried calling him even! What more could you do? You barely know that guy! He's gone, okay? For good."
"Did I say something?? I know he doesn't want to talk or whatever made him change his feelings, I don't care either! Get it?" I shouted furiously, lying again.
"You're just lying to yourself" and she knew it too.
"I'm not! Just.. can we not talk about this?!"
"You're in denial Nandini. Accept it, okay? You're just stupid! I know you think that I'm your best friend and I should be all sympathetic and supportive of you but you're an idiot to fall for a guy you met three weeks ago, became 'acquaintance's with benefits' or whatever with and now you're in love with him and when he left you, you're behaving like a freaking female version of devdas!" Her eyes bulged out as she stared at me for a minute, composing her anger, "I'm sorry that he wasn't what you thought him to be but-"
"Can we please?!" I requested, irritated by her. "Stop this."
"For how long can you avoid this!?" I stayed quiet.
She sighed and looked away. None of us said a thing for a while.
"I told you"
"Told me what?"
"That!" She looked at me again and sighed heavily, "He's Manik Malhotra, Nandini! The guy known to break hearts. You knew it all along, didn't you? I know okay it was me who told you just do something with him and all because I was stupid too and I'm always stupid but you are not! I always make the wrong choices and I obviously didn't see you falling for him. You make the right choices, right?"
