Chapter Eighteen: I’m Onto You

“It was like staring into the face of a familiar stranger. You know, that person you see in the crowd and swear you know, but you really don’t? ”

I was not sure that I heard my father clearly. It sounded like he said the name Jamanj but that was not possible. How would he even know Jamanj? There had to be some mistake. I looked around the room making sure that Jamanj was not behind me or something.

“Dad, what are you talking about?” I asked him.

“I’m sorry Liliana. It’s not my fault. It’s Jamanj’s fault.” He answered.

                “I don’t understand.”

                “Let me explain then-”

                “How do you know Jamanj?”

“Liliana a couple of years ago I was assigned to this case. It was a homicide investigation and I was called to Chicago to help out because there was a shortage of police officers.”

“Yeah I heard about that case.” I stated, remembering about what I had read online. “I don’t understand what that has to do with you and Jamanj.”

“Well there was a girl missing and foul play was suspected. One of the first suspects was the girl’s brother-Jamanj.”

I shivered at the sound of Jamanj’s name. He was the reason that I was scared for my life. Jamanj was the reason I had to leave my home and go all the way to New York City. He was also the reason why my sister Charisse was in the hospital.

“What did Jamanj do?” I questioned.

“Well basically the guy was crazy.” My father stated, now whispering.

                “Did he come after you?”

Mr. Leigh shook his head. “At first he sent me threatening messages to stay off of the case. At first I thought it was a joke but the kid was very persistence. I tried to get a restraining order against him but I couldn’t without any evidence that it was him threatening me.”

“Did he try to hurt you?”

“No. Jamanj only sent messages and showed up a few times at our house. But then it got worst. He said that he was going to kill me if I didn’t leave town.”

“But why did you go? He only sent messages. Besides, he was eleven years old. You believed that he was capable of killing you?”

                “Yes I did.”

“Is that why you left to New York without saying anything? Why didn’t you call or tell us what was going on when you left Hampshire?”

“Jamanj said that I was could not have contact with you, your mother or your sister because he was going to kill you all if I did.”

All of what my father told me stuck into my head. Jamanj had somehow managed to ruin my life even before he even knew me. He separated my family and threatened my father. I knew he needed to be stopped before he did this to someone else or someone else was hurt because of him.
