"Oh my gosh, I can't wait for your birthday!" Hannah screeched, wiggling around in her lunch table chair. Her light crimson hair swayed in her ponytail, her brown eyes sparked with delight.
"I know! Jane, you're turning twelve!" Kyle yelled, causing a few kids around their table to turn and glare. He has been Jane's first friend since kindergarten and also her neighbor, he never goes anywhere without her. Creepy, right? Nah, not really.
"Guys, stop yelling. I'm starting to get a headache." Jane complained and rubbed her temples. Her light green eyes looked droopy and painful, like she was already having future high school drama resting on her shoulders.
Brianna, the most relaxed and calm kid in the whole Ember Elementary school, scanned over Jane. She tried to figure out what was wrong because she knew Jane loves parties and birthdays.
"I'll take you to the clinic, maybe the nurse can help." Brianna dragged her friend up and out of her chair to guide her through the sea of tables. Jane sadly looked back at her table to see her other two friends sitting in a cloud of glum and boredom.
When she turned around to thank Brianna for helping her, she ran straight into the door. Which made her headache grow bigger.
"Sorry, I wasn't paying attention." Brianna said in a calm tone. She played with her strawberry blonde hair and pulled Jane to her side.
"Thanks for that. I've always wanted to be ran into a door." Jane snapped back sarcastically. Brianna blew off her statement and kept walking.
"I said sorry." Brianna's voice rose and she pulled Jane into the clinic.
The head nurse, Rosy, shined a smiled of yellow teeth and a wrinkly face. She glided over to Jane who laid down on a bed.
"What seems to be the problem, deary?" Rosy asked, she took the mechanical device to check the heart beat and blood pressure and started to check over Jane's body.
"I have a really bad headache and," she paused, "I don't feel good."
Brianna hovered by the door and watched intensively. Curiosity itched her insides, forcing her to stand over Jane as if she was a guardian angle.
"Does anything else hurt?" Rosy asked. Her tone sounded like she was annoyed with children, but that's her job and she'll get over it.
"No ma'am. But may I use the restroom?" Jane asked respectfully. Rosy pouted and nodded her head over to the restroom door, she ran her hand through her short frizzy brown hair and walked back to her desk where she could finish paperwork.
Brianna helped Jane up and guided her to the door. Jane sat down and closed her eyes, when she opened her eyes again she saw dots of blood on her panties. She scrunched her eyebrows together in confusion and looked around lost.
She finished up and cracked the door open. Brianna, who was guarding the door, blinked at her. Rosy looked up and glared at the two girls.
"Umm, is it a good thing to bleed when you pee?" Jane asked. Her dark skin burned red and she tried to blink away her embarrassment. Brianna giggled and Rosy smirked.
"I'm guessing this is your first time countering your monthly cycle?" Rosy got up and hovered by the crack door.
"My what now?" Jane said. She glanced at Brianna to find answers but could find any. She didn't know what to do, only to hide half her body behind the restroom's door.
"Your period. A mark of when a child like yourself changes into a young lady. It's normal. I'll call your dad and he can come to pick you up." Rosy sat back in her rolly chair and looked through the children's paperwork to find Jane's and call her dad.
"Am I going to die?! I'm bleeding! Brianna, I'm going to miss you! Tell my father that I love him." She paused, "Also tell my sister that she cannot have anything in my room." She dramatically slumped down to the ground and hugged her friends legs.
"Calm down. It's not the end of the world. My very first time was two months ago. It's embarrassing but around our age everyone starts to have these problems." She explained.
"So," Jane sniffled and looked up, "Does that mean guys bleed too and go through the same thing?"
"Oh brother." Brianna slapped her forehead and shook her head in disapproval. "You have a lot to learn."
