Micheal lead Jane outside the french glass doors, the arched vinery covered in all yellow Christmas lights and a white stone path laid under the lights quietly. The water fountain was turning on with yellow glow sticks at the bottom of the fountain.
"So are you going to tell me something or kill me and hide my body in a lake or something?" Jane complained, her red mask twinkled under the yellow lights, her red dress shining brighter than the stars as her shoes yelled for attention and echoing on the stone.
"Actually, it's something serious and I didn't want anyone else knowing but you. Because, well, we're in the same boat. I haven't told anyone about this and I know that only your family knows about that." Micheal stated. His grayish green eyes hid behind his white mask, contrasting his blood red tie and coal black tux. While talking, he twisted his black curls in his fingers to feel the texture of his hair.
"What are you talking about?! Are you talking about food? Being in the same boat and all-"
"No! Your, no, our powers."
Jane froze, stiff from head to toe. Her neon green eyes widened to the size of a playing field, she lost all feeling in her arms and mainly her body. A twist of guilt pinned in her stomach, like she betrayed her family when someone she barely knows found out her secret.
"H-how did you-" He cut her off.
"I read your mind. Actually, that's the thing, I need your help so I can control my powers. You've had yours for a while now and mine started up on the first week of school or something-" It was Jane's turn to cut him off.
"I can't help you."
Michael sucked in a breath, harsh and ridged. He turned his head to the water fountain and watched the water pour out from the top and fall to the bottom, he slowly walked over there and looked down at the water and yellow glow sticks.
"Why?"
Jane strolled over to him, hesitating to whether to rub his back or not, but in the end, she didn't. Instead, she placed both of her hands on the edge of the fountain and looked down as well.
"First off, I don't know you. I mean, I probably do but not when everyone in the house wears masks. Second, I can't even control my own powers. And on top of that, you can read minds so you know that I'm not lying." Jane explained. She turned to face him and look him dead in his grayish green eyes.
Michael studied her neon green eyes too. He slowly brought his hands up to his mask and pealed it off, his sweat making a fight to keep it on. He heard Jane gasp, then crack a smile a second later.
"Michael?" Jane asked, like she couldn't believe what she was seeing.
"Yeah, so now can you help me? Maybe we can help each other, like you can help me with my powers and I can help you with yours." He suggested.
Jane thought about it for a second, weighting out her options. This opportunity could help her control her powers more and help someone else out in the process. But how could she really know if he can read minds?
"Okay, what number am I thinking of?" She crossed her arms over her chest and pouted.
Michael took a moment, partly because he was caught off guard and that his powers decided to run slow today. "Nine."
Jane nodded her head then frowned. Lucky shot, she thought. She chewed on her finger and thought again, a harder question this time.
"Alright, whats my favorite food?"
"Trick question, you love everything eatable. But it's mainly Cheetos." He smiled.
"Favorite color!?"
"Yellow."
Jane gritted her teeth, growing frustrated to know that he actually does have powers. And that he was getting the answers right as well, she doesn't like being wrong.
"I have a brother named Tyler and a pitbull named Tree!" Jane yelled, clinching her fists in a ball.
"That's a lie! You don't have a brother, or a dog," he paused and thought it over, he looked over at her and noticed that she was missing something out of the equation. "Plus, why would you name a dog Tree?"
"I don't know, why the hell would someone name their dog Princess or Spot? It's just a name!" Jane snapped back.
Micheal threw his hands up in surrender and took a step back. Feeling a bit more comfortable, he leaned back on the fountain and looked through the french glass doors at the kids partying.
"You won't tell anyone, right? I promise I won't say a word about, you know." He finally said.
Jane joined him to lean on the fountain, looking at the party and shadows and figures dancing and moving in the dark. She sighed and looked over at him, wondering how it would be with another kid with powers at her school.
"I won't tell," she said, and in the next few seconds, she felt like she was falling. She felt like she was slowly falling backwards and was about to land in a pile of soft pillows and blankets. Well, she was actually falling but she didn't land on any pillows, instead she landed in the fountain. Half of her torso was gone while her legs and upper half of her body was visible. It looked like the fountain took a bite out of her.
It all happened in a flash. Jane squealed, Michael bolted off of the fountain and looked around quickly to ensure no one was around to see the situation, and then went back to Jane.
"Are you alright?! How can I help?!" He whispered. He made sure Jane's head was above the water and she was breathing.
"I'm fine, it doesn't hurt it's just hard to get back out of."
"Alright, well-"
"Jane!" Brianna called from the french doors, looking around. Once her blue eyes saw Michael, she started to walk towards him.
"Oh no, get rid of her! I'll handle this! Go!" Jane yelled.
And at that, Michael took off towards Brianna.
