"Natalie, hold the ladder."
"Oh okay." She squeaked nervously gripping the latter with her two tiny hands.
I stood on my tip-toes on the top of the tall ladder trying to put up the "no drinking and driving" poster in the schools hallway because prom is only 5 months away. Since Natalie and I are the health teacher's Student Aids, a decision I regret since the first day of Junior year because we basically do everything for him but teach the class.
The ladder wobbled and I had to grip the wall to keep my balance.
"Natalie!" I squealed but she didn't even flinch. She wasn't looking at me either.
My arms were spread out full length to hold the giant poster against the wall, trying not to wrinkle it.
"Natalie can you hand me the stapler?" She was still looking down the hall. "Natalie? Natalie!" I screamed to get her attention.
"Oh my goodness Michelle-" She let go of the ladder and it wobbled making me lose my balance again. I fell right off the top of the ladder.
Right into the arms of a stranger.
"Um hey." He smirked. The boy had brown windswept hair that almost covered his eyes which were a brilliant green. His strong arms held me tight to his chest. My heart was beating so fast I was sure he could feel my pulse. I looked back at him with wide eyes, still scared from the almost dying.
"Are you okay?" He asked with the same smirk on his face.
Behind us Mrs. Renn the school's principal was gawking at us.
I was shaking in his arms "Um. Yeah." C'mon Michelle this boy just saved your life and that's the best you can come up with?
He let me out of his arms and back on the ground. "I'm Sean Dawson."
"Michelle Sinclair." I blurted out without even thinking.
He smiled, trying to hold back laughter. "Well it was nice, saving you, Michelle." His green eyes seemed to sparkle when he said my name.
"Sean is a new student at Briarwood Academy." Mrs. Renn smiled gesturing to him.
"It's January...why-"
"Michelle!" Her venomous tone interrupted me nearly making me jump out of my skin. "That's none of your business, now is it?"
"No." I growled back at her. Sorry a student transferring in the middle of the year is interesting. "It is none of my business, sorry." I lied I wasn't sorry.
Sean was trying not to laugh but he kept his eyes on me. Was he laughing at me?
"I have to get back to my office. Why don't you show Sean around?" She was annoyed but forced a smile.
"I really would but I would hate to leave Natalie alone to put up the poster." I glared at Sean who was almost doubled over laughing by now. I tried to come up with any excuse I could to get me out of showing this guy around. What was he doing at this school anyway? He looked so out of place with his casually messed up hair, black t-shirt, jeans and Nike sneakers. While we all wore uniforms. Girls in grey skirts and dark green collared shirts and guys in khaki pants and the same shirts.
"I could help you." He flashed a perfect smile. He knew I was pissed and he was about to push it.
Before I could even negotiate I could hear Mrs. Ren's high heels clicking down the hall. I sighed. Guess I have no choice then.
I glanced at Natalie who was beside herself, her eyes were practically glued to Sean.
"You know we can handle this. I don't need your help." I crossed my arms over my chest.
He laughed "Yeah I can see that."
I felt my cheeks get hot at his remark. I did just fall off an eight foot ladder. But I just recovered with an eye roll and turned to get back on the ladder.
"You know I better handle this." He quickly glanced at Natalie who was still gawking at him. I gave her a menacing glare to stop but she didn't even blink.
As much as I hated to admit it Sean was a big help. We got the poster up in underfive minutes about a quarter of the time it took Natalie and I to even decide who would go up on the ladder and who would hold it. Obviously I lost the argument.
I climbed down from the ladder and I realized Sean could probably see up my skirt the whole time. He had that same stupid smirk on his face and held out his hand to help me down but I ignored the favor.
"Wow I thought you were a nice girl." He teased.
I narrowed my eyes at him "Well, you know what they say about assumptions." I tried to imitate his smirk.
He almost doubled over laughing.
I wanted to smack that stupid smile off his face and it's only been five minutes since I've met him.
The bell rang for lunch.
"Well, I will catch you later Mich." Natalie said catching up with our other friends as the hallways flooded with starving students.
"I guess I don't really need you to show me around. I just have to follow the traffic." Sean joked seeing the crowded highway...hallway. He was right he didn't need me. I didn't want him to need me. I haven't known him for long and I already know his type. He's a cocky, confident player and a smartass. How was he even accepted to a high class private school like Briarwood?
"The cafeteria is this way." I said weakly and started walking towards it.
Most of the students were gone but the ones that were left obviously stared at Sean like he was a rare species of animal. At a place like this I guess he was sort of the same thing. I felt like crawling in a hole as they whispered to themselves when we walked by.
Sean tapped my shoulder "You know. I'm not very hungry anyway. I will see you around." He turned and began walking down the hall I'm the opposite direction with his backpack slung over his shoulder.
I don't know what I was more concerned about. The fact that he seemed pissed off at me. Or the fact that I wanted to tell him to stop.
