Mother's Lament

I haven't heard anything from Emmaline.

She only left me a note, and then she left. I know she said that it would be in her better benefit, so I have to respect that. That is the least I can do for Emmaline as her mother. But that does not help me from feeling crippled. First Jeremy and now my own child...

I don't know how much of this life I can take...

No.

Emmaline would not want thinking like this. She said it herself that she would come back. She has always been my honest, beautiful little girl. She reminds me so much of Jeremy. Her hair, her eyes, even her laugh. It all screams Jeremy. I remember on our first date that my hat got stuck in a tree so he suggested we climb it together and get it. We spent the rest of the day getting to know each other in that tree. He was so kind and caring, yet it took a fire to take all of that joy away. It's been so long but the fire still seems so fresh in my mind. I met David and he seemed so nice at first. He even had a young daughter, who I did not like from the beginning. Penelope is a brat to the core, but her father seemed so nice and understanding that I let him in. One thing led to a remarriage and the decline of a mother-daughter relationship.

I miss Emmaline and Jeremy. Oh, Jeremy...

David has gotten even worse after Emmaline's departure. I can't even leave the house for work, or it's my head. Not like the dunce can even be close to doing anything against me. A mere Magician against the might of a Sorceress, such as myself, the very thought that he could compare to me, in terms of magic...it's inconceivable. Penelope is different, she can prove a tricky opponent. Penelope is still no match for Emmaline, though. At least I can be certain of one thing. Emmaline will grow to be a powerful woman. So she needs to be away. I suppose it was a bad idea to send her to White Light Academy considering...

"SO HAVE YOU RETHOUGHT YOUR LITTLE 'REBELLION' SWEETHEART!" David yells as he slams open the bedroom door.

Why did I marry such a fool? I'm sorry, Jeremy.

"No, I have not. Now are you going to let me out or what?" I ask with a firm tone in my voice.

"No! Not until you give me an apology for your little stint the other day." His voice had become a low deadly growl. One made to intimidate.

On my motherly pride, I will not succumb to this idiot. I now know Emmaline would have appreciated that. I guess that's what I need to as a mother. Live for my daughter, and respect and love my daughter. But I won't be able to that in front of her, so I will wait for her return. The thought of seeing that warm smile on her face brings a smile to my face.

"Bitch, are you listening to me!" David yelled, this time closer to me. I spot Penelope in the doorway looking in. She has an annoying smirk on her face.

"I am listening! You are yelling!"

"Give me an apology! You're lucky I didn't call any officials on your fine ass."

"No. I don't feel like that is needed."

"What?!"

His facial expression is the best. I should have done this a long time ago. Would that have changed my relationship with Emmaline?

"After all you have said to me and my daughter, I think no one should have to apologize." I looked him directly in his dark malevolent eyes as I spoke. I could see his eyes darken with malice. I will admit that the dark glint in his eyes definitely scared me. He pulled my hair and forced me to face him.

"Well, now your damned daughter isn't here! After what she did she left! She left your pathetic self after you went out of your way to stand up for her. That's the funniest thing yet!" He pulled tighter, and started to laugh.
